I have been considering changing out the front sprocket on my '02 R6, dropping it from a 16 tooth to a 15 tooth. I was told that dropping 1 tooth in the front equals adding 3 in the rear. It was recommended to me by others to go with 15 tooth front and 50 tooth rear. If I was to change out both the front and rear to 15/50, would I have to remove or add any links to my chain? I plan on staying with the stock chain. I am looking to make my bike a little speedier on the take off and give it a little more torque for wheelies. I think that I will go with the 15 tooth front only. It seems like it will be easier and cheaper. Also, I was thinking that only changing out the front sprocket would not make me take a big hit on my top end speed. Any suggestions or wisdom in this area would be appreciated!
Changing your sprockets means that you need to change the chain too. The thickness of the sprockets and chain must match and you won't be able to find a 532 (stock thickness) sprocket set. You will find a 525 or a 530 sprocket set.
This also means that you need to change BOTH front and rear sprockets the first time you change your sprockets.
Besides, you'll want a nice DID Gold X-Ring chain anyway. And yes, once you change the sprocket sizes, you'll probably need a different length chain. Make sure that when you buy the chain you get one that's a little longer than you need so that you can have it cut to the appropriate length.
yeah... just go to ebay and watch out for some companies give really good deals on sprocket and chain kits. they would even custom cut the chain for you.
cowboy r6 you'll lose some top end speed (terminal speed) with that sprocket ratio.
on another hand you'll reach your terminal speed much faster so it gives you advantage on 1/4 miles too.

You can definitely do this mod and keep your stock chain. KneeDraggers carries 532 sprockets, and unless your chain as at the extreme of it's adjustment range there will be room to go -1/+2.
One of the first things I did when I got my '03 was put a 15-t front sprocket on. It didn't make a HUGE difference, but I could notice I had a bit more grunt.
You can def keep your stock chain and still get new sprockets, I just bought a stage 1 kit which kept my stock chain becuase it was just fine and Phil at Moto-heaven.com and it consists of a 15 front, 50 rear . -1 +2. The price was by far the best out there and the customer service was un real seriously. E mail me if your interested because Ill tell you more about price and how to reach him. Mangini@hartford.edu Also changing sprockets is prob one of the best things you can do to improve low end torque. I think you know already what you need to do.... hahah

As far as DID or RK chains, they both are good. I really wouldn't know how to tell which is better. I've used both and there's really not a difference.
As far as losing top end speed.... how many of us have topped out our bikes? Not many if any. I've never had mine over 135 on the speedo, and that was way too fast on the street.
I would rather go with low end torque for a street bike.
Makes sense to me to just change everything to a 530 size the first time around, that way when you change your chain again, you can just buy a good 530 chain off the shelf instead of shitty 532 stock chain from Yamaha. I guess you can special order a 532 from DID or RK. Crazy me... I like to plan ahead.
ah save some extra weight and get a 520 chain and sprockets. i did and love it. i would also recommend you get sprosket specialists sprockets, and go to whitebuffaloracing.com to get the whole kit, they have the best prices on em that i can find :cheers
I can't imagine you actually noticing a difference from your stock 532 to a 520. I know that a 520 will need more adjustments, as it will stretch easier.
Hey Guys...
Where Can I go to find a front sprocket for my 01 to go w/ a 530 chain?
I am the new guy, so if this has already been covered, forgive me.

4lbs of weight saved is 4 lbs of weight saved. certainly cheaper than buyin CF pieces that only weigh a few OZ's less than the stock pieces.
MAZ, Like Loki said, call White Buffalo Racing Toll Free 866-249-3354. mention your membership here and he might cut you a few bucks off but don't quote me on that.
520 is the way to go! WAY WAY WAY lighter, and i haven't had any significant stretch.
I got the RK 520 GBW x-ring 120 link chain, and sprocket specialist sprockets.
And like others have said, going through Mike at whitebuffalo is the thing to do! I got in on a little sale last year and all my stuff was right around $130 shipped. He's had lots of great deals and has been great to work with.
