About to check out a 2001 R6 - PICS

Hey all,

Going to check out a 2001 R6 tomorrow, and honestly quite excited!

Will be my first sports bike!

The owner say's he is the second owner and it has a low 16,000km's on it.
But, before i go and lay down my hard earned. I have a few question's.

1. Are there any common problems that i should be aware about for a 2001 model/R6's in general?

2. Do these fairings look original?

3. Any idea on the pipe on this thing?

4. Any key points i should look at during inspection to verify km's?

5. Anything i should be looking at other then Oil/Coolant colors to verify engine condition? Never heard/seen one before in the flesh before so not sure what to expect. Should it idle smooth on a cold start? Will it be jumpy on idle? Is it a responsive bike or dull and mushy?

Pics are as below, hopefully I won't get screwed over and buy something genuine

Comments/Advice greatly appreciated, and with some luck I can join all you fine folk in the great privilege of owning a R6

I'm not too familiar with the 01's but everything looks pretty much stock. The stock exhaust appears to be shortened. Many sub 2006 owners shorten or change out the ugly long exhaust.

I am suspecting maybe aftermarket fairings and exhaust due to a crash, its quite cheap for what it is down here in aus. Specially with the low km's on it.

Always the question of why the low price :P

VERY clean looking 1st gen. Plastics are stock. Pipe is shortened stock. 2nd gear tends to go out on these. Ask questions and watch the sellers reactions. That and the voltage regulator plug tends to melt are the only real know issues with these.

Good to know about second gear. I would like to think with the low mileage the box would be OK?

How edd expensive would it be to fix the 2nd gear issue? Is it just a synchro?

these bikes don't have synchros...search it, it's been discussed many a time on this forum.

Most people usually replace the transmission with a 2nd gen (revised) tranny.

Re: About to check out a 2001 R6 - PICS

That is one clean looking bike. Expect problems with second gear. The voltage regulator plug is a pretty easy fix. The trans issue with second gear isn't all that expensive to fix if you can do it yourself but requires a lot of work. Like others have said, search and read about it. It's a problem I would expect all the first gen bikes to eventually have. It doesn't really make the bike not rideable but you can't accelerate hard in second gear so it takes the fun out of spirited riding. On mine I just short shifted second gear with plans to fix it when I could afford it and had time to take it apart.

Re: About to check out a 2001 R6 - PICS

Yep, second gear is the only REALLY common thing with the 1st gen bikes.. You'll know if you've got issues on the test ride right away. The bike should be VERY responsive once you get above ~8k RPM, but it's a real gutless wonder down low. Check to make sure the chain and sprockets look ok (because that's an easy indication of how well the bike has been maintained).. No rust or broken sprocket teeth. Ask when the last time the forks and shock have been serviced.

Otherwise, that bike looks pretty clean to me!
