Seasonal Insurance

for those of you who have to put bike away a few months due to the weather...

Do you fully cancel your insurance while it is away for 4 - 6 months during the winter time?

Ive tried discussing this with my insurance company and they told me that there is a chance that when I try to get insurance again the rate will be higher because it wasnt previously insured?

Anyone know if this is true or not? and how much of a difference it made if so?

Not only that, your registration may be suspended and there is always a chance your bike may be stolen during the winter

Re: Seasonal Insurance

Most insurance companies won't let you just stop and start it without some type of penalty, but what I do frequently with clients is to just put comprehensive only on a vehicle being stored. Then what you do is go to your DMV website, click on de-insured certificate, fill out the short bit of information, and for the reason put "in storage". This will tell the DMV that you still have the bike, and the plates, but you are not riding it. When the time comes to start riding again you'll have to go to the DMV to remove the de-insured certificate.

Note: If you have a loan you will be forced to keep comp and collision coverage to keep the bank happy. If you don't do this, they will place forced insurance on you (and it's expensive).

I'm tempted to take the bike out soon with the way this weather is going. Besides how much money are you really going to be saving for 2-3 months??

Re: Seasonal Insurance

what i always do even on my old bike(without a lien) is drop my coverage to just fire and theft. This way it is still insured, there is no need to reregister, and i can keep the original license plate. With just a simple call i can go back to full coverage and ride it on the streets again.
