Fancy livery and gold rims looks to be the order of business. Yamaha R6 is currently the best selling bike for track riders. Yamaha does not anticipate a large bump in sales to consumers to warrant a re-design so therefore the attitude at R&D is, "If it not broke, don't fix it."
It's not broken, so agreed. Some upgrades would be nice such as a stock Ohlins steering damper or a special edition with some Marchesini wheels though!
I don't think we will see a totally new R6 until another factory tops it. It's been the best think on the track in it's class. In the mean time we will just have to settle for the BNG's.
IMHO, I think the '08 R1 was the best looking R1 ever. I think it's hard (maybe damn near impossible) to top that design. The '09+ was a sexy looking bike as well, and again, probably hard to make a better design. '15+ isn't ugly IMO, just not as streamlined as the '08. It's a cool design, but Yamaha has had some of the greatest designs in the past that are hard to improve on or top. That's the problem of reaching a plateau or peak when you're too good at something; it becomes hard to improve and impress. As far as performance... well they constantly improve there so...
One design that I will say tops the '08 R1 is the Ducati 1199 Panigale. So, if Ducati can show that you can still be very creative, with a little hope, I'm sure Yamaha can pull it off with enough brainstorming if needed.
Ok the R1 isnt "ugly" but there are ALOT of features on it that make it just wierd and unattractive. Heaps of little colours that dont match up, the styling in general is just ripping off other brands to make some sort of frankenstein.
Yamaha is doing what car enthusiasts have been crying for for years; keep what's working the same, and only make changes if it's actually for the better.
Yamaha has a great product in their current R6, it's still selling, so why take a chance and whip out a clean build R6 when there's 0 reason to do so?
Okay Yamaha, you've had a great thing going with the R6... I get that, why screw with something that's really well put together, right? Just please, please, please let some of those fancy electronics from the 2015 R1 trickle down to the R6 platform!! New cluster, TC, QS, lift control, launch control, etc... A little nicer stock suspension would be great too, but let's be honest, unless it comes with Ohlin's, they'll probably at least be replaced by cartridges.
I'd love to pickup a new R6 to race with, but it's hard to choke up MSRP when it's more or less the exact same as my 2007 R6, except my 2007 is completely done up all around.
I'm incredibly tempted to pickup a 2015 R1, but I just really enjoy racing the 600cc classes.
