So I have been looking for a R1 for some time now. I finally found one. It's a 2014 R1, with 3000 miles on it. I would be trading my 6 in for it. The price on the R1 is 11999, but I got them down to 9500 otd. The payments for me are going to be around $125 to $135 a month. I own my R6 outright. I'm at odds with how much do I want the R1 and making a payment. The worst news is that I can only keep one motorcycle.
Me, personally……I'd keep the 6……but that's just me. I have owned 3 street bikes, and they have all been 600s. It's just what fits me. I love the little guys. I can see the draw towards a liter bike, but I just have so much fun on my 6. The R1 is more $ to buy, insure, & maintain. As I am the limiting factor when riding my 6, I just can't see me movin' on up. Again, just my .02
What those guys said. Also why rush the trade in just to have monthly payments on a sportbike with a little more grunt. If you must have a liter bike then I would keep riding the 6 while you save your cash so you can buy the R1 outright. I've never been a believer in financing a "toy", but that's just my opinion.
I personally think the same even for cars, financing just adds on more cash to the final price (tax, interest, dealers cut, full coverage etc etc) just extra $$ being thrown down the drain and the only benefit is style and a lil more power...best way is to always save up and go up the ladder that way imo, it might be harder but in the long run you'll always save at least $1000.00 and that's at least...wait till income tax if anything....it'll be winter so prices will be a lil cheaper...then grab a slightly older R1 if you still want a 1000, that way your not breaking the bank just to ride which your already doing on your R6....but hey idk your occupation so if $$ isn't a issue go for it, but if your like us regular ppl than save save save lol just my .2
I think an insurance quote on that R1 might help sway your decision. I was looking for a liter bike after crashing my old 600 and a couple of quotes from my current and potential insurers put me back on a 600 QUICK!
As a previous owner of a 2006 R6 and now a 2016 R1S I have to tell you that I do not regret my decision to get this bike in any capacity, it's such a step beyond the R6 it's hard to even put into words the superiority and technology put into this bike.
Now my suggestion to you would be to NOT get the 2014, it's a great bike but the 2015's and up are a technological and electronics marvel. What I would personally do in your situation is wait for the 2017's to roll out and get a 2016 R1S, just like I have, they come in Rapid Red/Raven/Intensity White or a Matte Grey finish. The MSRP for these are $14,990 new but when the 2017's hit they will likely be discounted $1,500 or more and you could talk them down even further and broker a deal to eliminate the dealer fees and setup costs.
I'm going to give you a stern warning though to avoid the 2015 R1 regardless of how much it is, they had an all bikes encompassing recall due to a catastrophic failure possibility in the transmission gears. The metal composites were not properly constructed and there was a possibility of shredding and locking up the internals of the transmission, this was completely fixed for the 2016's and there's been no recalls on anything.
I'm willing to bet that you yourself would be faster at any track on your r6 then your "step beyond" R1. And don't kid yourself. Yamah didn't catch the recal till late 2015/early 16 I think. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if your cases were split open to do the recall, before you got the bike...
Stick with the 6, unless you want something different. I went from starting on a r6 many years ago, moving up to 4 different r1s, followed by numerous Ducatis, with the latest one being a 1299. And now I'm back to a 2014 r6. Why? Because it's way more fun to ride a slow bike fast then a fast bike slow. And I am by no means slow on a liter bike. I don't judge anyone for going in a certain direction. I had to experience also, but I'm just giving you my input.
the best thing about the new R1. it doesn't stop pulling hard all the way to redline. that's why in that video he hits the rev limiter in every gear. you can't tell when to shift because it's still pulling like it did 4k rpms ago and you are hanging on with everything you got lol. the r6 starts to run out of steam several thousand rpm before redline and you know it's time to shift.
Liter bikes are like jacked up trucks. They are inversely proportional to penis size. The bigger the truck or bike, the smaller the peepee.
Stick with the R6. They're fun on the track unless you go to a track that has a bunch of straights.
haha... thats the best part! Riding a faster bike requires much better braking technique & throttle control. I guarantee your avg liter bike rider has no concept of that. And the ones that think ABS or Traction control is going to do anything for them...elOhel :nocontrol:nocontrol
Funny thing about long straights... they require great drive onto them and deep trailbraking off.
I know it's up there. like I said I have real world experience with it. the R1 is like having 2 R6 engines in the same bike.
for christ sakes with the stock exhaust, exup valve too, the damn thing will pop the front up over 100 under power. and carry the front wheel on some exits at the track for what feels like a few hundred feet.
Theoretically speaking is more of a R6 and a half lol but still. Every rider is different with different riding styles. Everything plays a part on how much can you actually push the R1 with/against the R6. Everything takes a part of it from mods to weight to tires.
Lmao ok this was a good laugh. Come on guys play nice. We're all part of the same community here. We're help to help each other and being mature about it.

I don't remember seeing a "maturity" prerequisite when I joined this site. >
Some guys are dicks, some guys aren't. That's just the way it is. For what it's worth, I think that turboblew does have a lot of knowledge…..experience-based knowledge, not just literature-based knowledge. He can be a little….polarizing?? at times, but that just seems to be his personality. Sometimes its a pain in the ass to weed out the dumb shits who think they know everything about motorcycles, because they read it online…..or, their buddy has one. I had a guy, this weekend, tell me that his 2000 CBR F4 "smoked" a ZX14R, and goes 225mph. :swordfigh It just wears on you :laugh Take what useful knowledge you can from comments, and remember…..sometimes its just fun to fcuk with people……don't take it personally. :secret:sing :yes :laugh
