Agreed, I haven't heard anything bad from anyone who has broken in per the manual. There are some guys who are having problems with the hard break in. This however is a very touchy subject. I definitely vote for the manual break in. If you do what yamaha says, then if it breaks yamaha can fix it.
Intriguing, sounds plausible, but it goes against everything I have ever thought about engines. It'd be sweet if someone on this board could do a test like this.
I have always broken in everything I own balls to the wall. This is everything from the dragstrip on down and have not had a problem with any of it. A friend of mine had his bike delivered to the drag strip. Its first 1/4 mile was right there. Thats been a few years ago now and he has never had a problem with his either.
I do want to clarify that I am not telling you to do it a certain way. This is how I do it and it works for me. Have fun and happy riding
Everyone has their own idea of what a break in should be. Some people beat it right off the bat to see what i can do and others take it easy at first and ease into it. I was one who eased into it. I didnt take mine past 6K the first 600 miles, got the first service done, and didnt take it past 10K til 1,000 miles. After that i took it to whatever. Its going to be completely up to you on what you think a break in should be or if there should be one at all...
I always just ride the bike like i always do but try to go just a little easier for the first 1K miles ( no long wheelies, try not to pin it off the rev limiter too many times). Broken in lots of new bikes never had a problem
How about a mix between the two? Maybe not baby it for the first 1000 miles but like jc r6 said not leaving it on the rev limiter either. Best of both worlds?
Thursday... If I had an extra $20,000 laying around, I would gladly fulfill your request. But, I don't. AND... I like to do the things that the manual tells me to.
The trick is to "Vary the RPM's" it won't hurt a thing to run it up into the red very briefly. I broke my '06 in loading the engine hard in the first four gears then letting off for a short cooling period and repeating. Super high speeds are not necessary. This was done to get a good seat on the piston rings. You only have a short window to do this and it must be done when the bike is brand new. I hit 25 miles then brought it home to cool down. I then did a oil and filter change. Again, vary the RPM's over the rev range.
For the 08 the manual recommends keeping it under 8300k for the first 600 miles, oil change then keep it under 10k until you hit 1,000 miles. Make sure you vary your RPM's
