Almost Crashed the '17 today..

So I was accelerating pretty hard, front pretty light when I hit what I think was a construction/bumpy area of the road and the bike went into a shockingly viscous tank slapper for about 6 sec., I was going about 70mph at that point and I thought for sure I was going over the bars. I had quite a bit of time to process what was going on, I just didn't think there was any chance I was going to regain control. I instinctively pulled in the clutch and fought the bars, everything I could do to stay upright, and then it just stopped as quickly as it started. Brakes were gone of course as all the fluid had been violently shaked out so I pumped the lever to get the pressure back in the lines.

You know what I was thinking during those 6 seconds?.. OMG this bike doesn't have a steering damper! Can't believe it. All of my liter bikes have had ESDs (electronic steering damper), my zx-10r, my H2, even my fz-10 came with an ESD. Wow.

So I have a manual Ohlins steering damper that I bought used off a 2012 zx-10r and I had sent it in to Dan Kyle racing to have it re-valved which I used on my zx10 racebike... anyone know if this will work on the '17 R6? Or what are you guys using? Or better yet does Yam offer a damper made for this bike?

excuse me while I go change my shorts now...

Re: Almost Crashed the '17 today..

I'm glad to hear everything is OK. You're right steering dampeners help quite a bit. My 15 zx10r has the Ohlins ESD on it. It's 100% required for the 10r because the quickshifter and the huge power just skips the front tire off the ground every shift. It was violent with the Ohlins ESD still. I've never experienced any bar violence on the R6. I bought my R6 with a GPR stabilizer. It does really good. I tested the GPR once bringing the front wheel down hard with the bars turned and it jerked straight real fast and no left right vibrations happened. I don't know if the upper triple is different than a 16 R6. I have seen Ohlins mounts for the 06-16 R6 floating around.

I didn't even look at that. The new R6 doesn't come with a steering damper.

+1 for the GPR. Been using it for years (street & track) and have had no problems.

Yeah I know I would be happy with the GPR. I asked what my guy (my builder) likes and he said he's been using the K-Tech steering stabilizer on the R6 at MotoAmerica so I think we'll go that route. The K-Tech is similar to an Ohlins damper. I'll be sure and post up pictures during my build.

Dude, I havent seen you since the ZX10r forum. Always one uping me with a newer bike. If you can find the ohlins bracket it should work. It might be cheaper to buy a GPR.

Hey! how you been?
yeah this is where I've been since leaving the zx10 forum (pic below)
R6: my builder wants to install a K-tech steering stabilizer so that's probably what we'll do.
man this bike is like child's play compared to the zx10, it holds soooo much corner speed it's unreal!
