That is the error code im getting and i cant find anything on it, can anyone help?..

When the light is on the bike runs like its in a limp mode and feels like a turd, i noticed the sound of the exhaust is a little off as well.

It will come and go, I was racing a few vettes the other day, the light came on so i had to stall till the check engine light went off, so was a little frustrating.

Any help would be appreciated.

Shop manual pretty much says check for shorts/bad connections in the wiring, no shorts, replace speedo assembly, no luck, then replace ECU.

Thanks.. I looked thru the online manual and didnt find squat on it.. But, if it says what your telling me then that sucks. lol

I was hoping for a certain sensor or something to replace.

No it definitely sucks, and it's that simple of a diagnostic chart:

Order - Item / Components / Probable Cause

1. Connections - Main Wire ECU couple, Main wire Harness to meter assembly.
2. Open or Short circuit - Repair or replace open or short harness, particularly mentions yellow/blue wire?
3. Malfunction in meter assembly - Replace meter assembly.
4. Malfunction in ECU - Replace ECU.

All around crappy options, but at least there are several ECUs and Speedos for sale in the Parts section. And tracing the wiring looking for shorts definitely won't be fun either.

What exactly is that on the bike?

The gauge cluster.

Took me a few minutes to verify that actually, as I was confused at first. In the FSM under the trouble shooting section about the speedometer, they refer to it as a meter assembly.

They should clarify that better though in the manual, as "meter assembly" only appears in the FSM 12 times, and 8 of those times its in the section explaining the "Er - x" codes.

just confused on how the "gage cluster" / "meter assembly" can cause a check engine light and cause the bike to be in a "limp mode"..

It will usually come on after a few minutes after a start up but then stay on till i get some HWY miles on, then it will usually stay off until I start the bike again.

Apparently the way the bike is programed. I know on my bike, any code I've gotten has put the bike into the "limp home mode". I couldn't wait to get rid of the EXUP valve for this reason.

I read a while back in the post about modifying the gauge cluster for a gear indicator it turned out that Yamaha apparently "encrypted" the the information that is sent between the speedo / ECU, so apparently if it gets incorrect info the ECU doesn't know what to do with it. Can't verify this, but since the company still hasn't released the "modified' gauge cluster I'm guessing this is true. The bike definitely wants everything to be "just so".

Maybe it's a crack in the circuit boards of one of them? And as it heats and cools it contracts and expands to break/make contact? I don't know, just guessing really.

Is there a recall on it?

If it was the cluster... you think it come one while cruising, it comes on at idle, just in neutral sometimes so there isnt anything particular as to when it comes on and off.

I don't know, might want to check with a dealer? I bought my R6 brand new, only notice I've gotten so far was about the front reflectors.

Yea.. i was going to give them a call and see what they suggest, but wanted to see what others have done with this same code and maybe give me something to try.
With all the things it could be, i think im SOL unless I just start replacing parts which might not fix a thing and cost some $$.

man.. i cant even remember what happened or what i did. trying to think and i might have added some go fast parts and the problem went away or cleared the codes..

The immobilizer is the big black box on the side of the ignition (if you're sitting on the bike looking at the ignition/key hole, look to the black box just to the top left of it).

Follow the wires coming out of the immobilizer, they lead to somewhere under the front of the tank. Simply disconnect the harness plug and your bike should clear the ER-4 error and off ya go.
