That filter is a bitch to get off. Had to use the screwdriver method and a cheater bar to get the damn thing to break loose. Anyways, I tightened the new one down to 12 ft lbs like the book says and it was pretty darn tight on there again, but it feels like it might be leaking. Its not driping or anything like that. I can just feel a little bit of oil by the o-ring. Is it normal for the o-ring to saturate like this or should I tighten it more? Thanks.

Did you rub a little oil on the O-ring before you put the filter on? Believe it or not, if you put them on there without putting a little oil on the O-ring, even though it is rubber, it will split when you tighten the filter down real good. Putting a little oil on the O-ring makes it more flexible and will make it seal better.

they sell a oil filter wrench (socket) for 3.95 at your local autozone btw if it only fits a 3/8 ratchet, so if you dont have one of them either autozone has them for 5.95

Cowboy is right. :werd Make sure to put oil on the rubber gasket of the new filter BEFORE you put it on. Also, make sure that the gasket from the old oil filter did not come off and is still on the bike up against where the new filter gasket should seat. This is a very common problem that has stung many guys before.

I like to buy the K&N oil filter. It has a ½ inch nut welded to the end of it for easy ON/OFFs.

I didnt forget to put oil on the new filter. I tried every tool I could find to get that damn thing off. Nothing would grip it. The screwdriver and cheater bar was the only thing that got it.

I went on a little ride (50 miles) and I checked the filter. Mostly dry except for right at the seal there was about a finger tip's worth of oil. Is this normal or should I tighten it more? How tight do you guys put it on?

I really wish I got the K&N, but Cycle Gear didn't have it. I didn't think that the filter would be such a pain.

The oil filter wrench works wonder to get those small and hard to reach oil filter off. The only draw back is the you can only losen it but not tighten it.

i used the filter wrench but i eventually stripped the edges so there was no more grip. ended up using screwdriver and that method took me hours. :hammer

Sure you can. Just turn the wrench around. BTW been changing my own oil on cars/truck/bike since before i was even able to drive and have always just put them on hand tight. This was a recomendation by my dad(mechanic) and i've never had one leak.

ye, my cousin is a mechanic, he always tightens them by hand... .. as tight as you can by hand.. but not tighter... that should be ok he says... and i trust him ;)

yep, them filters with the welded nut on are sure nice. and hand tight should be tight enough.

take a rag to it and wipe it nice and clean all around the seal area and then go for a ride and then check it again. should be real easy to tell that way if you have a small leak.

Agreed. Hand tighten. When I used the kind without the nut, I just punched into it with a screwdriver and turned it loose like that. Who cares, it goes in the garbage anyway.

:!: Just in case... don't confuse chain lube flyoff around the oil filter as motor oil.

Trust me on this one, check to see if the old gasket is still up in there before you put the new filter on. This will cause a leak everytime. Do you still have the old filter? Can you check to see if the rubber gasket is still on it?

There is no gasket left on there. Trust me. I spent a lot of time cleaning right around there and relishing in the fact that I finally got the damn thing off. YEA!

I already did the ride test. Only a tiny amount of oil was there.
