: just lowered my bike
r6grrrl 09-01-2004, 06:59 PM it's been a while since i lurked around here, but just thought i'd post this...
i [finally] got my six lowered 3" recently and HOLY SHIT does it make a difference. i can flat foot with my Alpinestars now (has about a 1.5" sole) and have gained a ton of confidence. i'm riding it to work everyday (downtown SF--which i wouldn't even go near when i first got the bike) and loving it.
anyway, i'm gonna start posting as soon as i get all my mod pics organized...
special thanks to miraclegrau for the headsup on lowering!! :drink
TexasR6 09-01-2004, 07:25 PM Nice job.
Can't wait to see the pics.
MadChild 09-01-2004, 07:25 PM Don't you lose a lot of your handling ability?
DreR6 09-01-2004, 07:38 PM yes you do lose your handling, its a huge difference. just becareful on twisties. my friend dropped his busa and thought the handling would be the same untill he lost it on a turn. but cant wait to see the pics :cheers
Mikeeh76 09-01-2004, 08:26 PM Glad you were able to lower your bike with out any complications!
I am interested on how your R6 looks, lowered!

moonlighter 09-01-2004, 11:04 PM is there a how-to... or something or lowering... not how to turn the wrench, but... why lower it, and how much... front/rear... for what conditions + rider ability?
how do pros ride?
thanks again

r6grrrl 09-17-2004, 06:44 PM is there a how-to... or something or lowering... not how to turn the wrench, but... why lower it, and how much... front/rear... for what conditions + rider ability?
why lower it? well, i did it because i couldn't flat foot--so confidence issues. at 5'4", i'm a bit too short for to be truly comfortable at stock height. i know there are hard core riders out there who may even be shorter than me who have learned to live with it, but i personally found the need a more flat-footed grip too overwhelming to overcome.
as for as a HOW-TO specifics, miraclegrau posted an insanely detailed DIY here somewhere...unfortunately i don't have the link on hand but you can do a search. i had the shop do it--i bought the link and they dropped it 3" (the max) for me.
udh2oskier 09-17-2004, 06:53 PM i've been dating a girl who has an 04' gsxr750 and we had to lower hers about 3 inches. it's funny cause i still have to back it up for her when we go places and park. She's about 5'3'', 105 lbs. and rides a bigger bike than me! Hey but she can wheelie and endo the shit out of it!
Nynexx 09-18-2004, 09:42 AM my bike came lowered and I love it.. no more tippy toe for me
malice 09-23-2004, 12:33 PM R6grrrl, did you lower the front too?
I recommend you do. I had a friend who lowered his R6 about 3" also but didnt do the front. I test rode it and it feels really awkward. Felt like your riding a cruiser and cant really lean too much on the turns, and I mean these are basic turns. He finally got the front end lowered and he felt the bike even rode better now that before. I test rode it after and it feels more natural than it did b4 he the thr fronts done.
Just my 2 cents aye.
:hammer :hammer
r6grrrl 09-24-2004, 11:08 PM malice -
yes, i lowered the front as well. thanks for the headsup
At 5'6", would I be able to flat foot while on the R6?
r6grrrl 10-26-2004, 10:50 AM At 5'6", would I be able to flat foot while on the R6?
i think it depends more on your inseam length... my brother is 5'6" and he was still on tip toes on my six before i had it lowered. if you really want an accurate answer, i'd say go to the dealer and sit on one.

I'm 5'6" and have mine at pretty much stockheight, its sitting high on the forks if you look at the pics of my bike... and I can flat foot one side (i usually put my left foot only down) .. otherwise its tippy toes with both legs down.... no passengers for me

lol plus they forget the fact that you live in the city were there are streets that are almost 90degrees pointing at the sky. just becareful not to bottom out at the end of some of those streets. My lady is 5'1" riding this 03 r6 at stock height. i know your tired of hearing stuff like that, but when you get comfy maybe you should lift it back up, you only need your feet at a stop. She started with the rear suspension link reversed to lower the rear, but as she got better at twisties she wanted it raised back up. She said she rather low side knowing she was pushing the bike to the limit then to low side knowing she was riding on a f'ed up suspension setting.
Do you ever go to any BARF events?

yeah some of these hills are just :scared
i was totally unbothered by the stock seat height when riding....but then when it came time to put my foot down, the gravel seemed lower than i expected and there i went and there the bike went,,,where my foot was supposed to go
Do you ever go to any BARF events?
no, i haven't had a chance... i lurk on the site occasionally though
XxKneegrowxX 01-25-2005, 10:17 PM At 5'6", would I be able to flat foot while on the R6?
I'm 5'6 @150 lbs and I'm on my toes. One of my freinds is the same height but 40lbs heavier (yeah, he's fat) and he's practically flat footed. I guess weight in addition to height is an important factor.

it also depends on the preload settings for the rear.
autoc 01-29-2005, 01:54 AM the taller the better
njk27 01-29-2005, 11:38 AM yeah im 5'6 and I cant flat foot both feet it kind of sucks but when I stop I only put my left foot down so I can make it flat and I dont look like a dumbass

i usually put my right foot down. i know its not what the msf course recommends but i just have my left foot ready to pound it into 2nd gear. only on up hill stops ill put down my left foot. besides i dont worry about what others think.
Suhas 01-29-2005, 12:26 PM im bout 5'7 130 pounds and both of my feet can stay flat on the ground at a stop no problems...
:jump
njk27 01-29-2005, 12:31 PM yeah when im stopped I always keep checking to make sure its in first I accidentally took off in 4th before some dumbass was talking to me and I got careless
newR6rider 01-29-2005, 07:40 PM hey all u short ****s...u need to be at least 5' 7" or taller to operate a 6...get on the back where u belong....just clownin on u guys... :hammer just glad all u ride
guitar_man04 04-06-2005, 05:52 PM I knew I picked ANOTHER wrong activity for my body size. I'm 6'4" but i'm comfy on the 6. I flat foot it with my knees bent. :hammer
Knightrider 04-07-2005, 10:07 PM i got a g/f that lowered her 03 R6 3" f&r and she is still on her toes (cant touch any higher) i think she is 4'11" or 5'...i was lookin at the pics r6grrl and the front didn't look lowered, the reason i say this is because the front forks don't look like they are stickin through the triple tree as high as they do on my friends, plus there is more space between your front fender and upp fairing than hers...hmm who knows? you have pics from different angles? im gonna try and get pics of my friends bike on here (next to mine  )
mansuR6 04-07-2005, 11:00 PM i ride a lowered 01 r6 2" front and 1"back... i actually bought it that way from a guy who's about 5'5... i'm 5'8 and i ride it just fine, kinda scarry on the twisties tho, cant hit em at high speeds like how i would like to...
but anyways a lot of people dogg on me for a lowered bike, they say you should shave the inside padding of the seat to lower it (supposedly most upholstery shops can do it) and that'll bring it down about 2.5" MAX. you'll get a little bit more uncomfortable ride but at least you'll maintain the integrity of the handling...
in my opnion i'll probabaly do that on my next bike. altho a lowered bike does look a lot sicker. i dont think i want to sacrifice handling over looks tho, but comfort & confidence is a must!
r6grrrl 04-08-2005, 12:44 AM i was lookin at the pics r6grrl and the front didn't look lowered, the reason i say this is because the front forks don't look like they are stickin through the triple tree as high as they do on my friends, plus there is more space between your front fender and upp fairing
when i first took my bike home, i wondered the same thing. i ended up bringing my bike to a different shop and asking their opinion of the the lowering job...they seemed to think it was all good. i've also had a couple of friends ride it to compare, and they didn't notice anything funky (like cypherone mentioned in a previous post).
anyway, several months and miles later, i'm totally comfy with it. then again, i haven't pushed it in the twisties so :?:
i'll be posting updated pics of my 6 later when my flushys + CRG lever come in. i'll try and take from different angles and in better lighting conditions.
