: Car Audio?
Bcobe 07-26-2010, 09:10 AM Alright Im asking for advice on car audio here because it seems like a more active forum than anyother Im on....
But I just got a Grand Cherokee and looking to put a system in it.... Im just woundering what all to get? I looked on crutchfeild and started peiceing speakers and stuff to the specs from their site but ordering off a different site... What you guys think? One thing Ive noticed is you tend to pay more for bigger named brands. Recommendations are welcome...

(I'm MECP certified)
kostyanj 07-26-2010, 09:18 AM It all depends on your budget. If you're realllllllyyyyy tight on a budget, get a good headunit first and build it piece by piece. I really don't believe in getting cheap components for a car audio system. You really get what you pay for with audio equipment. Cheap speakers are made from paper and don't really resonate well, hence killing any chance of having decent sound. Cheap amps produce a lot of noise and don't deliver good quality audio to the speakers. Cheap headunits also produce noise, so if you combine a cheap deck with a cheap amp with cheap speakers, you're going to end up with quality that's worse than stock. Just a little bit louder.
If you want suggestions for components, PM me
Bcobe 07-26-2010, 09:53 AM Haha idk what MECP Cert.
As far as paying for what you get thats true BUT I bought like a 900 doller kenwood double din just to have it not spit out the CD's... You do what you pay for but even the the high doller stuff breaks
kostyanj 07-26-2010, 10:00 AM Kenwood is a garbage brand to begin with so it doesn't surprise me that it would break. Pioneer makes something for every budget and that's the brand I would advise for a headunit hands down. The Pioneer Premiere line is the same stuff but with a 2 year warranty. I've installed about 30 different cars between my cars and my friends cars.
I did a show car for a friend of mine. He went all out, MB Quartz component speakers, Alpine top end amps, JL W7 12" subs, Pioneer Premiere head unit. Total cost was several thousand, but DAMN did that car sound good.
Bcobe 07-26-2010, 10:06 AM Yea Im not looking to bust my wallet but I just blew the stock speaker so I thought why not due it up. As far as the sub, Rear speaks and I dont think its solid of course things are gonna change. Im not looking for a flashy deck but it deff needs to have the audio jack in thing. I liked my JL 12" sub though (was in my truck but went out)
Kemist 07-26-2010, 10:57 AM My friend owns a shop here in Mass so anytime I ever need audio stuff done I just work with him lol..No system in my Jeep though haven't been able to afford one..I've always liked Alpine and JL audio ..Focal speakers are great but expensive..and IXOS wiring is awesome too..again expensive but great!!..
Buy within your budget or save up and buy piece by piece but talk to a professional on how to achieve the best sound possible within your vehicle.
Jiggaman13 07-26-2010, 11:18 AM I wouldnt buy whats in your links.
i think clarion is crap as well as "powerbase extreme" speakers.
I am rockin all pioneer gear with a avic d3 with ipod/bluetooth/backup cam. It was a pretty penny, but i get comments on my setup quite frequently. People are still whoa'd by being able to control your ipod thru your GPS head unit - i just love how the d3's integration with the ipod looks exactly the same as the actual ipod buttons!
My top audio gear would be(not in order)
Pioneer - they just make great head units IMO
JBL
Alpine - These companies make baller speakers/subs
Eclipse
Rockford Fosgate - for amps been running a bd1000 for like 8 years now - it JUST WONT DIE which isnt really a problem for me :D
jonesn51404 07-26-2010, 11:26 AM It all depends on what sound your going for. JVC Arsenal makes good head units and strong amps but only in the arsenal(comp) series. Pioneer, makes good head units as well. for subs go with JL,Kicker(L5 or L7 only) or audiobahn if for good quality speakers. I have installed all theses brands in several cars and they all last and sound great. A big thinkg to consider if your on budget is how big of a box and amp you'll need to power your sub. want decent sound and a decent cost go with 10's audioubahn will be cheaper than the JL or kicker. Checkout onlinecarstereo.com for some decent prices. Mid range speaker again are going to be determined by what sound your looking for but pioneer probably has the best affordable mid range speakers.
Jiggaman13 07-26-2010, 11:29 AM sign up for a crutchfield magazine. They're prices might not always be the best, but their customer service and support is head and shoulders above every other internet dealer i have dealt with, and they always have new cool shit in their magazine!
i have ordered all my hardware from there - wiring harnesses and dash kits, and they are spot on.
Dieselboy 07-26-2010, 11:33 AM Those components aren't very good. I'm running polk 4" and 6" in my truck with an Alpine type R 10" sub and a profile mono amp. Buy in bits and pieces instead of all at once so you can get better speakers. There's no point in upgrading crap stock speakers with crap aftermarket stuff.
+1 of Crutchfield
Bcobe 07-26-2010, 12:22 PM So general consensus is buy better quality components (bigger brands) rather than cheaper ones. I will adimt I bought a set of Inifinity Kappas for truck and love em.. Guess its time to go shop around a bit
Also is Rockford Fosgate a good brand? I have heard some of their 12's and really liked them

depends on what you get. There are several rockford series of subs - a friend of mine had a set of power t1's, well he still does, and im telling you, that shit can make your ears bleed when powered right. Do you want huge boom or just a good sounding system?
I went for a mix of both, my subs can boom pretty loud if i want, but most of the time i just want the good sound with a little bit of bass
Dieselboy 07-26-2010, 01:29 PM I had a RF 10" and it didn't last too long before I started having issues with it. I've had my alpine type R for almost 4 years.

The deck is a good choice. There's better in Pioneer's lineup but that will do. The sub (JL W0) is a good choice too, they've been around forever and it's a proven technology. It's not going to be the loudest or crispest, but for the price, you can't beat it.
As for the speakers, neither of those are anything really spectacular. Look at some pioneer speakers or Polk Audio or some of the higher end Infinitis.
Amps: look at Alpine or JL. Once again, don't cheap out on them. This is the heart of your system. If the deck is the brain and the speakers the extremities, the amps are the heart. You want something that's going to give a clean, clear signal to your speakers and subs.

JL W0 series came out before nancy pelosi was born...its an outdated sub...If you were to look PAST the mainstream stuff, you would find great stuff for a cheap price...I used to be fascinated by Alpine and JL also til i discovered brands like Image Dynamics, RE Audio, US Amps and other underground stuff...Open any car audio mag, you won't see much Pioneer, RF and kicker stuff

I agree that there's much better stuff out there than Alpine and JL Audio. However, in the consumer market, they dominate. To really get clean sound of higher end speakers and subs, you have to put serious $$$ into the project. For the price, companies like Pioneer, Alpine, JL, etc can't be beat.
Bcobe 07-26-2010, 07:13 PM Seems like theres a mix of reactions here... JL Good in on persons opinion then not in another... I know there opinions so not everyones gonna agree... I guess picking up a mag and reading would be my best bet as far as learning whats good for what I want. Im not looking for HIGH end or something that will make a redonculous amount of bass. Just something that will bump and sound good at the end of the day
HellFire 07-26-2010, 07:28 PM Here...Comb through this section: http://www.caraudio.com/forum/car-audio-classifieds/
Them cats live, eat and breath audio...I have dealt with several members on there with great results...Don't be afraid to get used stuff too, as long as its not beat to shit...If you were in tampa, i would let you hear my set up with no problems :)
Owen_R6 07-26-2010, 07:33 PM My favorite has always been alpine so my choice would be Type S speakers front and rear with 2 10" or 12" Type R subs

PlugItIn 07-27-2010, 09:54 PM im here now...:D. im very active on ca.com. I would stay away from JVC, Kenwood, Kicker, Sony, JL, and any other brands youve never heard of.
Look into DC Sound Lab, Sundown, Incriminator Audio (IA), older RE, Eclipse, and Digital Designs. Im sure im forgetting a few not so well known brands that actually are a great choice.
