Your scale is off.

Stock "wet weight" for a 2006 R6 is 405 lbs. With a full tank my bike should weigh approx 391 lbs +/- 1 lb. Is that so hard to believe?

D DEEZY

405 should be dry weight.

I'm seeing between 410 and 420 as listed "wet weight".

405 should be dry weight.

I'm seeing between 410 and 420 as listed "wet weight".

Your looking at the wrong thing then. Even if 405 was dry weight the fuel alone would put it at 435 lbs, add coolant, brake fluid and oil and we're looking at 450+ lbs. I may be wrong with some of my math but I'm using 6.5 lbs per gallon of fuel. According to the 2006 R6 service manual the Cali model weighs in at wopping 403 lbs wet.:fact

Here's some info and a link to help you see the light.

Dry weight:
2001/2002= 399 lbs
2003-2005= 357 lbs
2006/2007= 355 lbs
2008-2010= 366 lbs (417 lbs wet)

Ghost R6
01-02-2011, 01:13 PM
Deezy, yes I weighed my bike the other night but like I said, I've got a gallon of gas in it so it isn't full wet weight, hence the reason I said 391 +/- 1 lb based on fuel weighing around 6lbs a gallon.

Hockeyhick, I know those dry weight numbers on wikipedia can be posted or edited by anyone but the R6 Service Manual can't and it says 403lbs wet weight for my bike.

This is the Ride of the Month thread, we can start and motorcycle weight thread if it's really needed instead of jacking this one.

Your scale is off.

So you haven't actually weighed your bike then?

:stupic

You're high, dude. I had more chit taken off my last R6 and I measured it full of fluids on a certified scale at work - it weighed 400 lbs exactly.

I doubt my current bike is even as light as 380.

Edit: and that wasn't a CA model. You've got even MORE crap to take off.

Ghost R6
01-02-2011, 02:06 PM
Ok well I know what the scale said and I know what the book says. What was your last bike?

Edit: I did some searching and found that a gallon of gas weighs 8.3 lbs. With one gallon of gas in the tank that eliminates 29 lbs worth of fuel from the wet weight. Scale read 367 lbs, therefore 367(scale) + 29(missing fuel)= 396 lbs (actual current wet weight). That would mean that I've only removed 7 or 8 lbs from my motorcycle, pretty easy to do, the Cat and ex-up system probably weigh 12 lbs but now I've only got the mid pipe and Two Bros slip-on. End of story.

I like Sport Rider but I'm not sure if their numbers are correct. The April 2008 issue has the '08 R6 weighing 420 dry and 428 wet. 3 months later the weight dropped down to 399 lbs dry. It was once said that magazines print what the manufacturers tell them to print. My service manual (not owners manual) says 405 lbs California version, 403 lbs non-California version for the '06. I'm just gonna get it weighed and put a rest to this. My numbers my be a little off since I don't have the service manual in front of me.

Wet weights aren't always in parity. Not to burst your bubble, but 403 - 405 lbs. sounds about right for bike and fluids WITHOUT gas (or perhaps about a gallon in).

Yamaha says oil and fuel. Maybe no brake fluid or coolant, who knows.

Fuel doesn't necessarily mean topped up... I think it's best you weigh your bike on an accurate scale to be sure. No disrespect, but I know what a true 360 lb. bike feels like... not only is it quite expensive to get there (starting from a 390-ish start point), but judging from what you've done to your bike, I don't think you're even close. Removing the first 15 lbs. or so is easy, and the gains (or should I say loss) is fast... the next ten is expensive, and the last 5-10 is very costly.

The wikipedia spec you posted earlier is in error. It references the 2007 motorcycleusa.com shootout, which shows the tank empty weight at 393 lbs. (http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/268/571/Motorcycle-Article/2007-Yamaha-YZF-R6-Comparison.aspx)... if 355 lbs. dry were correct, that would mean that the brake fluid, less than 4 quarts of oil (lighter than water), and less than gallon of radiator fluid would weigh close to 40 lbs. :nono

No disrespect taken Maxx, like I said, I had about a gallon in the tank (probably less). Based on the weight of fuel I estimated a "curb" weight of around 392 lbs. I plan on having it weighed if I can find someplace to do it. I think I'll wait until I get my carbon fiber tank before I do it though.

Aussie/Euro bikes likely have a slightly different spec than US-bikes. Even so, fuel would only account for 28 lbs. of that weight, which put tank empty weight at approx. 390 lbs.

392 lbs. curb weight would still means you've dropped at least 24 lbs. from your bike (I don't see where you did this) and mean you would have a tank empty weight of approx. 364 lbs.

Which carbon tank are you looking at? Front carbon tank covers are common, but I don't think I've ever seen a full carbon tank for a R6... even so, based on a buddy's tank, I doubt you would save more than 6-7 lbs.

If my bike weighs 392 lbs and the thing weighs 403 lbs like Yamaha says then I only dropped 11 lbs, which isn't hard to believe. I'm not sure exactly how much fuel weighs, I've heard between 6.5 lbs per gallon all the way up to 8.3 lbs per gallon. At 8 lbs per gallon that is 36 lbs in liquid alone. If carbon fiber is so much lighter then steel how can I only save 6-7 lbs by changing to a carbon fiber tank. Pike I said, gonna try and find a place to get it weighed. Any ideas where I could do that?

Dude, you haven't done anything abnormal to your bike though - I just don't get how you figure your bike is so much lighter than most.

CF is lighter than steel but you still have fuel pump and cap - and just how much lighter could the tank get? The stock one isn't crazy heavy 9 but the tank isn't a huge mass.

No offense, but I can't even believe you're still going, to be honest. These are guesstimated figures in the first place.

At 72˚F, gasoline weighs approx. 6.25 lbs. per gallon. The 8.3 you mention is the weight of water (remember gas floats on water, right?). With an approx. 4.5 gallon capacity, the weight of the fuel account for 28 lbs. In this case, the difference of 8 lbs. (per your calculations) is more than significant. And you're still assuming that the 403 lbs. that Yamaha states is with the bank fully topped up, which I highly doubt. Topped up, I'm willing to bet a stock R6 weighs in the 420 lbs. range.

Keep in mind that the half of the R6 tank (as viewed from the exterior) is actually a plastic cover that hides the airbox. The steel portion extends below into the frame. For reference, the larger liter bike composite tanks (which are generally larger in steel surface area) usually result in an approximately 8 lbs. saving. In some cases, like the 2004/05 ZX-10R, the savings in only 5 lbs. (my buddy's tank was THE prototype for ETI-fuelcel). And that is also assuming you can find a full carbon tank for the R6, which if you don't have someone custom making you one or already have one picked out, I doubt you will be able to find easily, if at all...

Like I said before, my 2007 (non CA model) with M4 system, undertail, no exup, block offs, an no smog equip weighed 400 lbs on the dot - taken about 200 ft after I filled the tank up. On a certified scale at work.

Thanks Maxx, it didn't occur to me that the guy was thinking the weight of water when he said 8.3 lbs. I will accept how ever much my bike weighs, I just would like to know. By the way, when I weighed it at home I did it like we do for large cargo going in an aircraft. Two scales, one under each wheel and add the numbers together. Maybe not as accurate as using one scale but I was just looking for an idea of the weight.

I wasn't trying to start a big argument but I am curious about the weight of my bike. I still have all the smog shit but that's all coming out as soon as AGG ships my block offs and I tear everything out. Hopefully I'll be at 400 or less when all is said and done.

Around here anytime we wanted our vehicle weighed, we would take it to the city landfill. They have a scale that you can drive on. I think they charge like 5$ for a printout of weight.

My cousins are big into drag racing so they trailer their cars there and unload them at the scale.

You should look into that.

Why should you win BOTM?
I don't have the confidence to win bike of the month this time around, but figured just to enter. I know a lot of people don't like lowering their bikes because it looks bad and gives crappy handling, but for me being a new rider I had to get the confidence of at least touching the ground on my tippy toes. I've shaved down the seat and now half foot so I plan on raising it up soon. My first bike was a Ninja 500 then a FZ6-R, as soon as I saw the R6 I few in love so I went to trade in my 2009 FZ6-R for the aggressive R6. I bought it at a dealership and am still paying it off from Orlando Yamaha Kawasaki. Being a kid, I wanted a fast car like everyone else but decided to get a bike because it saves on gas, I never drive with anyone and it's fast. I'm grateful to have my bike and it's my only transportation. I have a superstition, like the guardian bells. My first bike I wrecked because I didn't give her a name, my second bike the FZ6-R I gave a name and didn't wreck, when I got the R6 I got into an accident after a month then I thought about it and decided to give her the name Ariana, she deserves it and if she wins a BOTM award I couldn't be happier.

What do you mean by reliable? Meaning they won't burn out on you? I've had these cheap eBay flushes for a year now and no problems. I'm getting smoked since I have a black bike + smoke integrated tail.

Was just kidding. It's not hard, I just don't see anyone else posting the polls for it so there has to be a general reason only 2 or 3 people do it. Maybe it has to do with it being legit or something, not saying you're not trustworthy but I don't know what goes down. I thought about posting it 3 days ago as well, but if you do it then it'll be better for all of us.

Hit 266 km/h GPS proven and couldn't go any more cuz the bike was redlined.
