so im going to be painting my bike as soon as im done sanding the fairings. My question is which rattlecan paint is the best to use? I had a can of some legit stuff once it held on great and had a gloss to it. It mightve been engine enamel but im not sure. What do u guys recommend I use? Im going to be painting the bike white, help a bruda out!

i used the cheapest stuff i could find at lowes... and it's held up GREAT. no clear or anything. only place that it's a bit ragged is on the lower directly behind the front tire... right on that point. been "sand blasted" back to primer. :laugh stupid rocky tracks around here. :rant

Get a cheap paint gun and paint bro. It won't cost you much more and will come out much better. :fact

Either way, be sure to lay on clear coat to keep it protected, and to reduce fading.

well money isnt a huge issue for me, i just dont know how to paint with a gun and such. how would it make it easier? is it because it is a more even stream? im assuming I need an air compressor for a gun as well. does it rly make that big of a difference?

Also, what kind of paint would I use for a gun? It has a refillable bottle right? So something that comes in a bucket?

Can't really say about that, all I have every used to paint metal is like tremclad, or rustoleum :laugh

I wouldnt myself ever take on painting the rims... Mine are in for powdercoating atm.. :sing

U can get a paint gun for super cheap from harbor freight or wherever. It makes a world of difference. It saves time too. I dunno if you've ever done a significant of painting with a rattle can, but it shits up your finger tip, hurts your hand, and spatters, etc. Consistancy of color from one can to the next is lame too.

For painting small pieces like body work, you only need a small gun and a small compressor. the gun only runs at like 20 psi.

Any paint supply house can sell you paint by the pint with the needed reducers or activators. You can get cheaper paint by getting a solid color without flake and pearl in it too. The pearl and flake makes it hard to paint and drives the cost way up.

The paint will last way longer this way man.

This is what my bike looks like after sliding on it's side thru rocks, gravel and grass for 25 feet or more.

If there was no clear coat, and the paint was just half ass rattle canned on, most of it would be missing.

It's worth it man. Especially after all the sanding you've done. The prep work is what makes a paint job. It's like 75% of the battle. The other 25% is materials, patience, and finally last is skill.

The man is right, if money isn't the question, nothing beats a paint gun :fact

alright looks like im getting a paint gun, itll give me a new toy to play with :toocool: my rims are 2 different colors (red/black) cuz I have to swap the front one out cuz its got some rash so I need to get em painted :/ ill worry about that when I get to it tho. was thinking about a flake but white really doesnt need one at least I dont think. Hopefully wont be too bad of an experience overall. Also, ive been sanding with I think 300-400 grit sanding blocks to get the old paint smoothed out and such. Should I hit it with 1000 grit or does the 400 suffice? it feels pretty smooth but ive never painted anything of this magnitude before so I want to make sure before I **** all my work up.

400 will be fine. all I did was scuff my primer with scotchbrite pads which are abrasive like 400, maybe even 200 grit. You wanna give the base coat/primer something to grab onto bro.

Regarding the wheels, your best bet is gonna be to have them sandblasted, then you can paint em and clear over them with something durable the paint shop recommends.

Wear a respirator when you paint bro. Good ventilation and steady temperature is very helpful also.

Here's a pic of the paint booth I made in my garage. We painted 4 sets of bodywork in 2 weeks in this booth:

My rattle can jobs. Take your time with prep and they'll come out great. Held up pretty well for about a season before they started to deteriorate. I usually get bored and change it every season anyway. Both jobs cost less than $20.00 each.

I painted my tank and fairings with rattle cans. I also used rattle can clear on the tank and stickerbombs. Its flat white with gloss black. Its all about wet sanding really. Prep it right and it'll turn out good.
