So...I haven't seen one of these yet so I'm making one. I know jack shit about fishing. I was in Gander Mountain today for at least half an hour looking at fishing shit when I came to the realization that I don't know anything. I know nothing about good rod and reels, hooks, lures, lines...any of that shit. Since I have no more street bikes I'm thinking that this may be a nice relaxing hobby that I can take up to pass the time while here in NY. So...I'm looking for input from those of you that like fishing and know a thing or two about it. What am I looking for? What should I stay away from? I'll most likely be fishing strictly from lakes...maybe some streams.

Lee, you can get a decent rod and reel setup at Walmart or dicks for like $30 bro. I have a bunch of poles.

Expensive ones are definitely better and worth the money, but I'd rather spend that money on tackle bro. I use a collapsible Shakespeare That is so damn convenient and it's long. Like 7 feet I think. It has a lot of action at the end and it's tall so I can get good action with the lures and still cast from shore well. And it's long enough to battle some big ass fcuking fish man.

Just get something convenient and cheap to start with. Eventually you'll get good and you will determine what type of fishing you are doing mostly. Then get an appropriate rod and reel for what u do most.

Jointed fire tiger rapala is my goto lure. I have caught the best fish of my life on the lake here using them.

Start reading up a little bit on bass and what they do. Right now they are spawning and still laying low and sitting in there homes they make to raise the fish. Within the next 2 weeks the water will get warmer (certain temps trigger the fish to go deeper or shallower, to shade, on the hunt, etc). Stuff like that and what color lures are recommended for certain clarity water is good to know sometimes.

How to tie the knots is helpful. How to setup a Texas rig on a rubber worm so you can drag it over logs and shit in the water (referred to by real anglers as "structure" lol). What worms people like (purple senko's FTMFW).

Seriously tho, my GF has a pink shitty rod with one of those enclosed reels with the button to release the bale.... If you hook a herring or minnow thru the tip of its back it swims all retarded and bass bite. I've got pics of her with a couple 2-3 lb small mouths she nailed like a she BAUCE!

I have some fishing videos on YouTube. The Canadians think chain pickerel are pike. Check the comments!! :laugh

I'll post pics and vids of some of my catches

:YEA Thanks man...I've been looking up tackle box and beginners fishing on you tube..been pretty helpful so far...There are some guys that I work with that go fishing on the weekends and at lunch so I may tag along with them and pick their brain a little bit for fishing in the area! Definitely excited to get out there and do some relaxing and drinking and fishing and thinking :laugh

I got this rod with a reel for cheap. Then I spent like $50 on this genesis reel after I decided I was going to be doing more fishing. The better reel has a much more precise and wider adjustment range on the trim. It's not bad!

79190

That's a blue fox spinner minnow on there. Blue fox has awesome lures. These spinners on the front of the minnow are epic. With the small ones I can catch a cooler full of Pan fish in a couple hours for an epic fish fry!!

I have a cheap fishing rod from walmart that's pretty decent that I bought probably 10 years ago. I also have one from my grandpa(who passed away when I was little) that's for saltwater ocean fishing. It's pretty beast and heavy duty.

And just for lulz, who here had those Disney character fishing rods when they were a kid? I did hahaha

I'm really big into fishing. Here are a few pics since opening day.

For bass, my old reliable is a 4" morimoto. For trout, I'll usually start with a 1/16 or 1/8 ounce pink and green rooster tail. I have about 20 poles from ultra light to huge surf rods since I'm into freshwater and saltwater.

I don't take too many pictures of fishing trips. I do some bait casting stuff but for the most part I take my back packing fly rod and hike a few miles into some high altitude lakes for a few days. I would just buy a ugly stick or a featherlite. I really enjoy the featherlight, any fish seems big on one of those. Snapped mine last weekend on a nice rainbow. I had it for a few years and it had seen a lot of abuse.

I just got into salt water fishing two years ago, mostly bottom fish (fluke, seabass, blackfish, cod, ling, etc.) & I still feel like I'm a noob - my rod & reel were pretty cheap (~$100 total), and you'll end up spending more on tackle, leader, braided line (instead of mono), etc. which has no stretch and gives you a better feel of what's going on down there on the bottom. I haven't gone in a while and I'm dyin to go back soon! :fact

I read your original post, but I haven't read through the responses yet.

Basically what you are fishing for will determine what kind of tackle and equipment you need.

I'm a bass fisherman, and I can help you out a ton if that is what you are wanting to fish for.

If you are on a tighter budget I would go to a Walmart and pick up a Berkley Lightning rod 7 foot medium heavy action. Great rod for the money.

A baitcaster reel is best, but for a beginner those can be a pain in the ass to learn to use, so I would say pick up a decent Quantum spinning reel and some 10-12lbs test line, and you should be good to go.

Shimano makes a great product and backs there rods with a lifetime warranty. I broke a shimano cumulus around a $400.oo rod last summer while fishing lake casitas. Shimano replaced the rod no questions asked.

The rod and reel you will be using will be based on what type of lure or bait you will be using and also the type of fish you are after. For instance you would not want to go out and start trying to throw 1 ounce swimbaits on a medium light spinning outfit. Or vice versa like trying to though a 1/32nd ounce mini jig on a medium heavy bait caster setup. You have to think of it like this a carpenter can not build a house with one tool! Evry rod and reel has it purpose. I have about 7 rods and reels and each have there time and place.

A good starting point would be a medium power fast action spinning outfit i highly recommend the shimano crucial series for a begginer great price point around $70.oo light weight great construcion and a life time warranty.

IF you have any questions you can on anything about freshwater fishing you can pm me. Also this site is full of information. www.fishingnetwork.net

Shark fishing is probably the most relaxed of all deep sea fishing. You just sit there drifting along waiting for the shark to show up. Kinda like freshwater fishing with a boober. We usually do overnighters for shark and there's a limit of one per trip. So basically 20+ hours for one fish means alot of boozing time, but the adrenaline rush for one shark is definitely worth it.

Tuna fishing is awesome if you have a good group of guys to go with. There really isn't much down time. We've had streaks where we went 2-3 hours catching one after another as fast as you can get lines in the water.

I couldn't tell you for that area. I live on the coast, in South TX, totally different style. We flats fish here, for trout red and flounder. I have a 31 Hatteras motor yacht in Marathon FL, middle keys and we fish offshore there as well as flats fishing and fly fishing for bone fish. But I am at a loss for the North Atlantic. Best I can tell you, is first determine what type of fishing you are going to be doing. Bay fishing, offshore fishing, surf fishing, lake fishing? First you need to determine that before you buy anything. Talk to the locals, go hang out at the piers, lakes etc and talk to people that are fishing to make a decision. Those that are in your area will know best.

Not sure if you got this or not.. but if you did not, avoid it. I had one and ended up buying a kayak. Way better than that shit. That pontoon thing is only good for no current.. and clean water.. warm clean water lol

Dangling your penis through the whole in the wall of the bathroom at your local gay bar doesn't count.
