I'd recommend the PS3 for a Blu Ray player. For a couple hundred more (depending on what system you get) you can have something that plays games too.

PS3 FTW I love mine, it's one hell of a multi media center!!!

Also, I hear the PS3 loads load Blue Ray movies faster than most stand alone Blue Ray players.

I got the PS3 for blu-ray. It plays DVDs, CDs, games, surf the web. I got the fan, but it was loud, took it off, put PS3 in open area, not in cabinet, it has given me no problems.

The only reason you should get a standalone unit is for 7.1 surround sound.

Go with the Samsung BDP-2550...The PS3 is a decent Blu-Ray player but doesn't upconvert movies well. The Samsung one is the same price as the PS3 and will upconvert movies with a very high-end silicon optix chip that is supposed to get about 70% of Blu-ray quality out of a regular dvd. Other positive, for those people with a non-HDMI switching receiver with DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD it has a 7.1 analog output for still uncompressed audio to a normal receiver. Good audio still, thats how mine is running

If you don't care about what regular dvds look like and don't mind having a game console as your blu-ray player definitely the PS3 because it can do its firmware updates automatically with its built in wireless internet and thats actually a big plus.

Your tv has a lot do with what you should get. Don't end up buying a unit that your TV can't use to its fullest potential.

There are blu-ray players that do everything the ps3 does, and do a better job at it (except play games of course). The ps3 came out in Nov 2006. I'd bet lots of improvement on blu-ray have come out since then.

This guy knows what he's talking about. But PS3 does upscale, just not as good as high end blu-ray players.

I have heard rumors about them using firmware updates to them to help them upscale but i wasn't sure if they were true or not...thanks, its good to know

(i'm a 360 person so i haven't really used the PS3 too much outside of playin around with them a little at the store, work for Best Buy part time to keep my discount)

That is why they have firmware upgrades and few BR players do it better than the PS3, and the ones that do are much more than a PS3.

PS3 firmware update in April of this year made it DTS HD capable

PS3 will never be great at upscaling even with the firmware updates, one of the few issues Sony should have addressed more .
I gotta go to the store and check out that BR player you are talking about, if it looks that good with regular DVD I might even pick one up. I just don't see how it can even come close knowing what I know about this stuff.

Surprised you are running 7.1 uncompressed signal with an analog cable, are you also running component video cable for the video feed from your BR player or are you running HDMI to the TV?

the price of the BR player isnt an issue i just want the best. i didnt buy all this high end equipment to play crap.

I hear you, I have a good amount in my setup and if I am going to buy something I go all out as far as my wallet will allow.
Most of the people on here aren't spending $600+ on a BR player, atleast that is my assumption.

I've got the Sony BDP-S300 running a Monster 1000 series HDMI into my Panasonic th-42pz700

I'm running 5.1 with analog rca's to my Sony ES receiver just because I haven't felt like switching to a new receiver and a new blu-ray player

Also...that samsung I was talkin about is only 400 regular price, so a pretty decent deal

I think the older movies on Blue Ray are the most impressive because they look the most enhanced. I bought the Shining on Blue Ray and it looked like it was filmed last week. Sickkk

I have to go check it out, but not sure if I would buy it....I barely ever watch regular DVDs anymore.

Common man, you could probably get a smokin deal on a new Yamaha say.....RX-V1900 or RX-V3900

Oh yeah I absolutely could, I could get the 1900 for under $800 but right now I'm more worried about buyin a new car and all that...money better spent elsewhere my friend

Depending on how christmas ends up though, maybe a new Sony ES STR-DA4400 or something though, we'll see

Yeah, I know what you mean....was thinking of selling my 4600 and getting the 3900 but can't do it now, too much money for other things it will have to wait until tax time. I want that freakin Z-11 but it is just too much, would go with parasound racks or something else before I drop that much coin on a receiver.

Yeah, the Z-11 is a beast, but a little much for my taste... I actually had a customer of mine come in and pick up the Denon AVR-5805MKII which is just an absolute monster weighing in at almost 100 pounds pushing 170 watts a channel and costing $7000

I was a little surprised to say the least, but his system sounds AWESOME.
