: 2000 Oil Change? (Newbie Question)
Joshuaantonio 03-01-2009, 07:26 AM Alright, so I've searched this site, Google, Yahoo, and my service manual on how to change the oil on a 2000 R6....No luck....I've found some general posts but not sure if the oil change for an 06" is done the same on my 00". I've only had my bike for 3 weeks, it has 13xxx miles on it. I've changed the coolant, cleaned/lubed the chain, added an alarm, some L.E.D's =-) and now want to change the oil. What I need to know is how do I change it, what kind of oil/filter do I use and how long does it take?????? If this is a stupid question, my apologies but like I said I'm new and am just trying to learn. Thanks guys!
**Again, yes I searched the site before asking this question!
Here's the "how to" video I found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N63UsX-99ig
shnormo 03-01-2009, 07:47 AM You need to use motorcycle oil duh. Oil filter, Bosch 3300 filter 4 qts of oil (only takes 3.8) Find the drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan. The filter is on the left side just left of the stator cover. Fill the new oil filter with oil before you put it on.

Okay, thanks for the reply. I'm headed out to get oil/filter now. I'm not sure I know exactly where the oil pan is but if I can't find it I'll be sure to ask. FYI....When I get done I'll post a write up with pictures for other 00" newbies :YEA Thanks again!
varnaR6 03-01-2009, 12:25 PM 1. Since the OP said CHANGE oil, I assume it's not a dry crankcase, which means she's only going to take 2.7l of oil. DO NOT FILL IT WITH 3.xx LITERS.
2. The filter on a 1st gen is near the kickstand, not left of the stator cover. You'll see it when you take of the lowers it'll be around the kickstand/rearset area.
When you change your oil, warm up your bike. I usually take a ride to get the oil and filter. The oil will flow better. Put your bike on stands or at least a rear stand, if you drain on the kickstand, be prepared to hold the bike level for 10-20 minutes.
Pull the lowers and you'll see the drain plug. It's a 17mm head. I'm sure you can find it.
get the plug out (have a bucket or whatever you're collecting your oil in under there cause oil will flow almost as soon as you get the plug loose.
Put a new washer on the plug if you have one (which you should seeing as how they're almost free) and set it aside. Leave the oil to drain and get another little bucket for the filter (or you could do the filter first if you only have one pan to collect in).
Pull the filter and dump it. Put the new filter in and tighten it BY HAND.
(OPTIONAL) This is a good time to put the key in the ignition and turn it to the on position to check that the oil light has come one. but DO NOT START THE BIKE! I REPEAT DO NOT START THE BIKE. I've always done since a few years back I nearly killed an engine because my drain plug washer was leaking and my oil light never came on even though I was half empty.
I normally leave my bike to drain for 1 hour. You can do however long you want. When you're ready, put your drain plug back in - BY HAND!!!! and then use a wrench to tighten 1/4 TURN ONLY. Don't tighten beyond a 1/4 - 1/2 turn after hand tight.
Fill up with 2.7l of oil, run the bike for a minute or two and check the level. Fill as needed.
The end. Good luck.
Dieselboy 03-01-2009, 02:12 PM Owners manual explains this process step by step, I recently switched to AMSOIL 10w40 fully synthetic with an AMSOIL filter, good stuff.

I know it might be a little late but have you fig. out how to change oil in your 00 R6? Actually I have also bought an R6 with 13,xxx miles on it. I would really appreciate if you would post some pics of how u did it and where it is located. I am also a newbie like you. Help a newbie out lol:lmao
Joshuaantonio 03-11-2009, 06:15 AM Welcome to the forum, lot of good info here. Alright so basically this is one of the easiest things I've ever done. "Varna's" directions (above) are right on the money!
If you follow those you'll be good. Only problem I had was getting the filter off. I had to go buy a little claw tool to get it off. I suggest buying a K&N, they have a bolt on the end of the filter that makes it easier to get on and off. I don't have a bike stand and did all of this while it was on the kickstand. Wasn't hard at all. If you really need pictures let me know and I'll post some. I'm still recovering from some lady hitting me at a stop sign last week. But if you really need em" I'll post em. Good luck and let me know!
Note** The oil drain plus is very noticeable, when you remove the bottom left fairing, lay on your back and look under the bike and you'll see it plain as day. The oil filter is also very noticeable.:toocool:
Used:
- K&N Performance Gold Oil Filter part number KN-303
- Castrol POWER RD R4 4T Full Synthetic Motor Oil SAE 10W-50
GEORGERE 03-14-2009, 04:38 PM I am sure I've done the oil change this way before but today I made some mistakes :(
0. I did mostly all of the steps from above except for the following:
1. I lightly tightened the new filter with the filter wrench.
2. after running the bike for a few minutes with the new oil, i noticed a little leak from under the filter (a little oil was on the engine crank case or whatever the bottom part is called)
3. noticing that scared me and i tightened the filter some more with the filter wrench again... oh well
4. rushed home to review oil changed procedure on the forum and so i m here
Help needed:
if I overtightened the filter or somehow corrupted the rubber ring that works as washer (sort of) what are my options? how can I know if I m in trouble? if it doesn't leak anymore, am I good to go? if it does leak, do i need a new filter or there is some remedy... what else? the filter I used was Mobil 1 (108)
Please help...
Thanks!

+1 to website and post. website says 3.5 quarts, but 1st gen its less than 3 for 600. i used motul 7100 10w40 its good stuff runs clean and seems to make the shifting a little better.
