ok so i know this has been beat to death a bajillion times and it really depends on what i want..but my temptation to get a ducati has been drilling me these past few months just dont know if i should pull the trigger and get it...its either going to be an 848 evo or the new panigale, more so the panigale s....im just curious to the maintenance costs as a daily rider (about a 60 mile commute daily not including pleasure rides) ive riden the 848 several times and i liked it and can only imagine how the new panigale rides ive sat on it and surprisingly it was comfier than the 848 to me...thoughts from you ducati owners would be much appreciated
im really not concerned with comfort to be honest so thats not really a problem...i know its a different ride compared to jap bikes but i only have 1 friend who dailys his 848 and he doesnt ride as much as i do but he said go for it...any info/thoughts would be awesome... thanks guys!!
The maintenance costs are ridiculous and MUCH MUCH more frequent. The 5000 mile service involves a valve adjustment (at least on the 1198). It takes forever to be in the shop and is far from cheap. My pal took the ducati maintenance courses and still wouldn't do it. I think he sold it right before the 10k checkup.
PArts are twice the cost easily for the Ducs too. Total cost of ownership is incomparable.
Ducati is offering free maintenance for the life span of the warranty, all inclusive package. Wet clutch means longer life and valves adjustments every 3rd weekend are history.
I prefer my r6 to my s1000rr on most days. The r6 handles better and therefore is more confidence inspiring. Sure, the s1k blows the r6 away at a launch, but its not like a 600 is really a slouch 0-60 either. I dont mind the seat on the s1k, but maybe thats because I have a 2012 and as I understand it the seat was changed. What year is yours? Also, I agree the vibrations are annoying but I only get them between 6-7000 rpm or so, so I just cruise outside that range.
When I got my s1krr I thought I had outgrown my r6 and it was time for more powa, and I wanted a taste of all the tech advancements the new bikes have. I thought Id sell my r6 eventually because I figured Id be so enamoured with the BMW that the r6 would be a dust collector... but the BMW made me appreciate what an awesome machine the r6 really is. Admittedly, I am not comparing a stock r6 to the BMW but just thought Id add my 2c.
Oh, and get the Aprilia RSV4 APRC if you are set on an Italian. Its a much nicer machine than the Duc
HP4 is not worth it. SuperBike did a full review on their new suspension get up, while it is good step forward, it is still no Ohlins. Launch control would be cool though.
i could spend 20k elsewhere but i dont want to :laugh
i know the 848 5k service is just oil change and look over everything..15k i think thats when the first valve adjustment is due?? thats what my friend with the 848 said..i know the new ducatis are way easier on maintenance than the old 749/999..i could still hear my friend crying about his 749r lol
but im looking at the 1199 and the f3/f4 tomorrow see which one feels best...hopefully i can make up my mind..so ready to go italian
Yeah my Moto GP comment, was a little vague. I could have explained better.
I was not comparing any of the bikes in Questions to GP bikes.
I wont go on about it, too far off the OP question.
In the end just get what you want. EVERYONE on here will have a opinion on the bikes. Some you may agree with some you may not.
It's your cash so buy the bike you want....
But I think the Panigale is the best looking out of the ones listed for sure, minus the R6. Then again I like the KTM RC8.. Since you are in the 1200 class
lol thats where i was going to go tomorrow my friend bought the frost evo and another bought an 04 mv agusta f4...they also have the black panigale there :hump
i think ima wait if i decide to get the 1199 and give ducati time to work out all the current issues it has and get a 2nd gen.....he also said look at the 848 evo way less money and gives me extra cash to do whatever i want with it....i like the rc8 but at the same time i dont wouldnt get one though just not for me....im 99% sure im going with a ducati next for sure but im just not sure how feel about the mv agusta yet well see...def keep you guys posted with whatever choice i make
Coming in late to the discussion.....but I hate you. I have wanted a Duc since I saw the 999 on the cover of a magazine. 848 is an awsome looking bike, but IMO the 1199 is the best looking bike made. Hand down. If you can do it, go for it.
so im 99% sure im going with the 1199 saw it in person and just wow!! rode around and thing just moves!! the mv felt good as well but like i suspected way to uncomfortable...the 1199 felt really good perfect height and everything
my next question is whether or not to get the base or the 1199s.....i talked to a few pani owners while i was there one had the base and the other had the s...both said the s wasnt worth the extra money...they said unless youre going to be going to the track every other weekend the electronic suspension isnt worth the extra money...they also said its going to cost a lot to replace suspension parts once the warranty expires....now im stumped ive been looking at pani forums and ive been reading a lot of people who agree the base is a better buy for normal riders not track junkies
I'm kinda of a snob that way... most of my Ducs have been R models... but you can probably get a base model with 30mm NIX cartridges that would more than give the electronic suspension on the S/R models a run for their money for a lot less $$$...
The only thing I can add to this thread is that the ducati 848 is ****ing uncomfortable as hell! Sexy bike but i had the opportunity to fool around on one recently 09 to be exact and damn that seat SUCKS. For that $ I would expect a decent seat, not a brick. The panigale I cant speak for. Easy thing to mod I suppose
...which is actually quite comfortable compared to it's sibling KTM SuperDuke R seat. :fact
