I had some time on my hands, deicided I'd try and make my own plugs. It's in the beginning stages so please forgive the crapyness.:sing
Right now I am working with 60 gauge styrene plastic to give me a base to go on. Then I plan on using a self hardening epoxy to shape into a perfect fit for the tail & if successful... I will mold and make a solid prototype.
updates on this will be slow, I'm a notorious procrastinator :fact
That's the game plan, currently they are not being held up by anything. I spent the day sanding down the plastic till it was a decent fit, so on it's own currently it just pops into place.
The process would be SOOO much faster if I'd take the tail apart and work in the house, but as I stated before... I'm a procrastinator.:lmao
I quit being lazy about this and put in some more time, I'm now sculpting the plug instead of using styrene plastic pieces. I'm close to having a finished prototype.... My one regret was not doing both sides at the same time.:lmao
I hope the image size isn't to big?
I started over again from scratch with a resin epoxy.
HEY! I'm an artist 2nd, I'm a Jackass 1st. That is an idea that crossed my mind but the stuff I am using could screw up my paint royal. So I'll do it the hard way.
I over sanded a bit and left myself with a little bit of a dip, not isn't very noticeable unless your looking for it or take a picture with flash like so.
Small update: I Think I'm just about finished with one side. Depending on if I decided to make copies or not will effect how I mouth them onto the bike.
The only thing left to do now is figure out a way to lock the plugs in place.
Velcro doesn't work as well as I had hoped, the right plug keeps pooping out of place. The paint job on the right plug went a little wrong got "pin holes" going on.
If anyone has any suggestions feel free to shoot them my way.
They look good....the right side looks really clean. Is this how they fit with the two sided tape?
The reason I ask is because the ones I bought from Russ in the UK look good, but for some reason the two sided tape I am using negates it from fitting flush.
This is how they fit without anything holding them in place. They pop right in, but I need to find a way to hold them in place (the right plug isn't perfect). I might try Velcro again or find a way to use the OEM bolts to help with the issue.
You think the right looks better then the left? Hmmmm..
This is just based off the undertail shot in picture two. To me the right seems to fill in the gap completely.
Maybe create more of lip on the plug to attach inside the fairing. That may help with the application issue by having more contact to the inside of the fairing to press down.
If that makes sense. Just throwing out some ideas for you.
You're totally right I got confused for a moment there. The right plug was the 2nd one I worked on, the left side was the first so I learned from my mistakes by the time I moved to the other side.
The left side keeps poping out of place so odds are I will have to start from scratch.:thumbdown
I'll have to cough up another 100 bucks then I can finish the project and make copy's sell on ebay make some cash back.
Well you're definitely on the right track man. They look really good. There will probably be a high demand for them. Good luck, can't wait to see the progress.
Maybe a bracket that will fit over the passenger peg plugs once fitted into their slots? You can put that across then velcro or double sided tape it down. Hopefully you understand what I'm trying to explain because if it comes to me drawing a picture it's going to cost some $$$

They look decent, but not Sheer Perfection, would anyone notice it's not a super uber fit nope. I could make more, but I'd have to invest another 100 dollars into the project to fine tune and make copies. As of late I've been more on building a track bike. If I had mold making stuff laying around I'd make you a set for free.
I actually have a friend of mine that owns his own body shop going to make the plugs for me. He said he can either make them bolt up or snap in which ever one would be easier for me to deal with. I figured might as well do the bolt in method since I'll already have the seat off to put the rear seat back on if my gf wants to ride with me.
92 MIM It was a gift from a friend. Could use some new nobs maybe a neck adjustment. There is a slight buz on the 3rd fret high E string that drives me crazy.
Screw strats bro, best guitar I heard, owned & played 1978 Gibson les paul sliver burst custom. Starts sound hallow as SHIT in comparison.:fact
