I have been searching and havent been able to come up with the best way to trim down or shorten an exhaust. I have a Yosh TRS with carbon fiber sleeve on my 05 R6 and would like it to be a little louder and shoter. Any pictures or advice, besides buying another slip on, would be great. Thanks.
Could someone please give me advice on how to shorten my Micron slip-on. I know I've seen a couple of videos and pics of it done. But no one seems to replay back to me regarding it. The exhaust doesn't have rivets. It does however have an allen key bolt just inside the tip. I planned on this weekend installing my Vortex rearsets, shortening my exhaust (painting the tip, piping, exhaust mount, and passenger pegs black).
Here is a few pics of mine. It was a bitch to get it to fit. Due to the fact that its oval at the bottom and 14in in circumference, and round at the top 13 1/2in circumference.
How did you bend the inner pipe oance the can was cot. I cut my can in half but the pipe doesn't match exactly with the end cap hole. It took about 30 min and what a difference in sound. Awsome. Also polished the new short can for a better look.
Here is a side by side comparison of stock vs a chopped (camera phone).
The chopped exhaust has been in a crash by the previous owner and I got it for dirt cheap. I cut it down maybe an inch more but as far as the dents, inner side of exhaust mainly, on it there's not much I can do. It's more of an experiment/practice and I gotta say anybody can do this.
As far as the sounds goes I wish there was someone I know so I can compare mines with his/hers as I didn't or couldn't bend the inner pipe. The previous owner tried to use a torch cutter, not sure of name, and it's basically hacked. I tried to bend the part that was torched but pieces of the pipe would crack.
did this today. i removed the baffle at the exit point as well and through it in there. also said screw the rivet gun ,and just put self tapping pan screws in for now. sounds night and day compared to what it was stock. looks much better as well. i feel its safer to ride with a louder exhaust so cars can hear and see you. good write up guys:YEA
Heres my 08 R6s I got the shorty cut directly from Two Brothers Racing. Its a factory cut/made can my dealer had them custom make it and it sounds bad ass.
in my Sig youll notice I cut mine quite a bit. I also relocated my fmf badge for some added flavor. titanium isnt the easiet material to cut through either. lol
I used to run two bros shortys. but they killed my bottom end and made the bike idle real inconsistently
I just did this to my bike, a 99 R6, but I used the exhaust from a 99 yzf. The stock mide pipe is already shorter so the pipe sits lower and it came black from the factory ... Looks sweet. Will post pics as soon as I can.
Looks good racer37, what paint did you use on the midpipe and tip? Whenever my Level One Racing slip-on comes in I'm going to be painted the midpipe black, just wondering so it'll look like yours.
if ur looking at the bike do u take off the end cap to the left an cut or do u take off the end cap to the right where it mounts to ur mid pip an cut......
Adverse affects on performance can very with how you actually mod the can. I just did this mod and without PCIII I lost power on my low and mid range. Top end seems to be, maybe, slightly better. Remember, this is not an engineered can, and if you start reading into back pressure and air/fuel mixtures, apart from a cheap decent sounding mod, this is very primitive to a two bros, yosh or leo slip-on.
With PCIII you can correct the changes in back pressure by altering the air/fuel mixtures. PCIII offers preloaded maps for different slip-ons so you will have to find one that gets close. A custom tune on the dyno will do this properly and is the best recommended option to properly adjust for any mods you do.
I have found with PCIII thus far - since I haven't been able to get dyno time, the Yoshi Slip-on with aftermarket or stock air filter pre-loaded PCIII map has been the best.
Bottom line, if you do cut the stock can down there are two things to consider performance wise. You don't want to run too lean of a fuel mixture because you could burn the exhaust valves and you most likely will lose some power on the low and mid range until you can get a custom tune.
I cut down my stock exhaust using a lot of the info I found on here. I cut off 9" and painted the can high-temp flat black with gloss black on the end caps. Sounds 10 times better than stock, and looks pretty sweet too! What do you think?
I do whoolies to shorten my stock exhaust. So far I've managed to scrape down an 1".
