I was curious what made you all choose the R6 over the R1? Also, after you had your R6 for a while, do you wish you would have gotten the R1? or visa versa.
I really liked the r6 and at the time I was still pretty new to riding so I was going to be buying a 600. IMO the r6 was the best out there or close. When I was shopping for a liter bike I wanted something that was best for the street and still could perform. The r1 wasn't in that category.
I have both.....like the R1s power but it is too much for me.....the R6 is abit more fun....would not get rid of either....however I ride my WR250X way more than the R1 or R6
Love both for their unique differences... The 6 is light & nimble & fun to toss around. The 1 has solid handling & simply sounds amazing- with power that makes you smile ear to ear...
Yamaha's r6 & r1 still come in last place in all the performance shoot-outs. But, to me, they still have the most reliable, fun & sexiest sport machines on the market at the best $ value... Only those solely fixated on performance #'s with $ as no object would think otherwise I think.
Started 3 years ago with a FZ1 for first bike and wanted to switch to a sportbike. Found a good deal on my current R6 and that's it... I will buy a R1 when a good deal will come. Until then, I ride my 6.
coming home from afghan i put a 300$ deposit for this guy off craigslist to hold his 2010 r1 for me. when i got home, the guy called me and stated his room mate threw a party and two guys got into a fight in his garage and knocked it over so the bike had tank damage and cosmetic issues. went down the road to our bike shop and there it was the 2009 r6 in the window, dropped my money down and took it home.
reasons why im happy i got the 6 now instead of the 1.
that was way to much bike for me
cheaper insurance
didnt wanna die
Because it's so much fun passing a liter bike on a 600 on the track...
And specifically the R1 ('09+)? It's a turd. It's a turd in regards to weight, to power, and to looks. I don't see why anyone would own one. They do sound cool. I'll give it that.
Magazine reviews say it puts the power down smoothly on the track, thanks to the cross plane engine. Uh, you do realize it's just down on horsepower in general, right? Compare the number to the other liter bikes. Is it really a question why it seems to "handle" better than other bikes making 20+ more HP?
If I could only choose a liter bike, the R1 would be my last choice.
If you don't have the skill/talent/experience to ride a liter bike close to it's limits - which realistically, very, very few of us do - none of the things you're complaining about matter.
The sound & power delivery of the crossplane is really unique and not an experience you can get in any other bike. You are also incorrect about the looks. They are the best looking of all R1s to date. :fact
^ ditto what Fallis said... Unless u can truly ride a liter bike to its limits, which most of us cannot, it's kinda irrelevant that it's underpowered compared to the S1KRR or ZX10R. It's like saying a GTR or Corvette sucks compared to a Ferrari. Possibly true, but kinda irrelevant...
Coming off any 600cc, the R1 is still a very respectable liter bike- ie tons of power, awesome sound, great Yamaha handling/ reliability, and arguably the sexiest looking headlight assembly. For the most of us, it's plenty fast and plenty of fun. Plus, realistically, it's definitely cheaper than the ZX10R or S1KRR, which are easily $15.5k and $18.5k otd ($23.5k otd for the HP4).
Started on a 250r, bought a f4i, then a 600rr, then a r6s, and wanted a r1 chose a 2010 r6 instead.
R6 is better looking.
Better gas mileage.
Handles better, I've test road a 2010 r1.
Cheaper insurance (main reason, I'm fairly young)
Bike was 3k cheaper than r1 to begin with.
Also like what everyone says, you can barely maximize the r6's potential on a street, why hell would you want a r1?
Lastly, I wanted to stay alive, I am trigger happy with the throttle.
For me, it's simply because I don't have $23.5k to spend on an HP4, $18.5K on an S1KRR, or $16k on a ZX10R... And, for some ppl it's prolly perfectly ok not wanting to buy the very best and the most expensive bike if it means spending more than they can afford?
Now, if I won the lottery that would be a different story, of course... Hehe. but, for the sake of this discussion, we're being practical.
If a new R6 runs under $9k otd, and a new R1 under $12k otd, then that's a pretty big price difference if u ask me- esp compared to the S1KRR. That's almost a $6k price difference and at least a month (or two) alimony child support payments. LOL. >.<
High Side;why in the hell would I choose the heavier said:
In my case, my choices was a 125cc kart, the R6 or the R1... being a person who prefers "aim high" the R1 was the primary choice, the kart can provide the same level of "fun" but only in a track, at the end the "diplomatic negotiations" with my wife, she makes me select the R6, the spec sheet says 130+/-hp (wikipedia) which is enough for any rider, with a lower weight and a good review it was the overall winner!
Pros: lower weight than the R1
enough power, nice design
cheaper
cons: the power band, needs to be high on rpm´s to deliver punch
seat height (for me)
precise as a knife.... plan your cuts or.....
every one wants a 1000cc bike but for what? motoGP skills are not for sale in stores!
I find the R6 more fun, took both out on a Yamaha demo day, did not care for the R1
