Just bought my first R6 2003, heard they are prone to tank slappers... Is this true? Is a steering dampener a good investment? What are your thoughts? Is there anything I should know about the 2003?

All bikes are prone to tank slappers. Bad riding technique leads to tank slappers. How long have you been riding? I'm assuming you are new from this question.

Welcome!
So does good riding technique, especially if you can actually ride the bike.

A damper is always a good idea, especially because it inspires confidence. Confidence is always important.

Welcome to the family.
I went from an older heavier YZF600R (thundercat), never really had an issue on that bike. 1st good ride on my 01' and it got slap happy a few times on me. Bought a damper and replaced the crappy Shinko tires and it hasn't happened since.

Sub'ed for pics :sing

tank slappers are, in my opinion, almost always rider induced. i had one this past season at a track day at about 110mph. it was because i had too much input on the bars because i was tired and lazy at the end of a session near the end of the day.

a damper will help, but it may only mask bad riding habits/technique.

just make sure you understand the how and why before you blindly install a damper...
