I'm starting to look for a newer car. One of the cars I'm liking is 06 and newer 3 series BMW. I have looked up some reviews but most are just opinions of people. So anyone out there own one and would like to give some advice? Are they reliable? Are the repair costs really that expensive? This is basically my first vehicle I will finance so I'm trying to gather as much info as I can.
I (my wife) have a 06 330i. Very reliable thus far (~85k miles). Its out of warranty.
The most common complaint on all these bimmers is the power window motors blowing quite frequently. Once a year almost (1/4 doors will blow every year). Apart from that, its not bad at all. All maintenance was free uptil now including brakes etc (not tires though), so cant comment on that yet. I have a feeling the wifey will not be pleased with the service bills (as Walmart cant reset the computers after an oil change)
If it dont have a warranty or maintenance (ask it for free), then dont bother with one, thats my view.
BMWs are great cars if they have been maintained and taken care of. I have a 2011 M3 and I love it. I bought it with the intention of keeping it for three years and then ditching it, but the more I drive it the longer I want to keep it. Hell, if I didn't have this bike addiction I would have put a blower on the damn thing by now.
The e9x platform is great but I recommend going with a 2010+ if you can afford it. If you are going to go the iDrive route I would HIGHLY recommend sticking with a 2010+ as the older iDrive system is slow and horrible to work with. Also they made a lot of changes to the build and materials after 2010. The 2011+ got the LCI update (Life Cycle Impulse; a fancy way to say facelift) which consists of different lights, bumpers, wheels, etc.
The early 335 had a problem with the turbos and with other boost related parts but BMW has an extended warranty for those affected builds.
Buying a CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) from a dealership is not a bad option as well. You may pay a bit more but you will get some piece of mind knowing the car was inspected and approved for resale by BMW directly as well as them providing you with a shorter factory warranty.
i have 03 m3, i usually trade in my car every 2-3 years, but i love the car so much i decided to drive it to the ground. it is very reliable if you treat it right.
I have an '08 335 XI. I love it. A lot of small things went wrong with in at first, but The included maintenance took care of it. But certified CPO if you go BMW. It's the only way.
