Am I semi-correct with the 250f-450f correlation to 600s-1000s? I assume as a novice rider the 450 would probably hand me my ass. I just want something I can climb on and a have a frigging blast. I just need to get familiar with service intervals and top ends and all that.
Correct. find a friend with a 250 and see if it's ok with you. The 450 is beast, half the horse power and half the weight as a r6. You could ride either for sure tho.
Service intervals really depend on how you ride. The Yamaha engine is built like a tank tho. If you can work on a r6 you can work on a Yamaha dirtbike. Same engine just 3 less cylinders.

You're gonna love it. It's the same in a lot of ways yet very different also.
Btw if you read the service manual it'll say replace the piston kit every race weekend....f that. The manual states service intervals as if you are a top factory rider lol.

I did to until our team switched to 250f. That torque :drool
I do miss the smell and sound of the 2 strokes tho.

Cant go wrong with a 250 2 stroke, easy to work on and very cheap to rebuild.
Lots of power and they sound and smell great, lol.
I just sold my '06 KX 250 a couple of weeks ago and miss it already.
How tall is she? I have a 98 CR125 and love it. I had a 2001 YZ125 and I like the Honda better (handling and more torque yet less top end). 2001 XR100 (first 2 wheeled powered bike)

I'm short so 125 is just about my limit.
I never understood that. A 125-450 all have a 39in seat height. Least the yamahas. So if you can ride a 125 you should be able to ride any bike as far as seat height goes

I'm looking to get into dirt, had 4 seasons on the R6 now and hate being off two wheels all winter. Looking to stay Yamaha or go Suzuki perhaps. I'm 6'1, 240lbs, with four years or street experience. I've been scoping either the YZ250F, or RM250. Will the 250 haul my big ass around and be fun? Or should I look to the 450? I assume its like the R6/R1 difference. Any input?
@240 a "big 3" raptor would beat your a$$. 450 bike might be a better option for you though. Bleed blue and stay with a yammi
edit---dammit I hate when I respond and there are multiple pages and I'm on 1 thinking its the whole thread FML
