Oil Pan Write up?

So I attempted change the oil on my R6 for the first time over the weekend and managed to strip the oil pan. I've got a new one with gasket on its way, but I'm looking for a write up for changing the oil pan. My searches haven't really turned much up. If someone can post a link to a write up or make one real quick on this thread, it would be much appreciated.

I'm going to be of no use on the oil pan write up, but save yourself some time and spend some money on the Stahlbus oil change kit. Well worth the money the next time you do an oil change.

I've actually already ordered one of those valves. I don't want to deal with a stripped oil pan again. Good suggestions nevertheless.

I'd would think its pretty straight forward. Remove fairings, remove oil pan bolts, remove oil pan, install new oil pan and gasket (if it requires one), tighten bolts to torque specs, and fill with oil. Lastly check for leaks and reinstall fairings. There are service manuals on here that are in .PDF format which can be downloaded and save for later.

1. Remove fairings
2. Drain Oil
3. Remove slip on
4. Remove exhaust headers (with a wobble socket extention you can unbolt the header without removing the radiator)
5. Remove oil pan
6. Remove oil pan gasket with razor and brake clean
7. Reinstall in reverse order of removal
8. Fill back with oil

Make sure to clean ALL the gasket material off the motor mating surface. A plastic putty knife and brake cleaner work well to loosen and remove debris. When you're putting on the new gasket, use a good oil resistant sealant like yamabond or Permatex grey and smear a light layer on both sides of the gasket . Tighten bolts to specs in a star pattern. And if you don't already, get a good torque wrench. Not one of those Harbor Fright jobs, but a decent click type....Craftsman can get you by for many years.

Apart from the oil pan drain bolt, everything else needs to be torqued to specs. Its not that hard, but if you have any questions while doing it, post pics and ask on here.

When you remove the pan, take it off slowly to see how everything goes back together. There's a strainer in there that puzzled me for a while.

Yup, it's pretty easy. It's all hex-head bolts.



Don't feel bad, I did the same damn thing a few years ago. Keep the old oil drain plug-- you never know when somebody needs one of those.

^^^This^^^ And honestly its not all that hard, just kind of a PITA. Also as already mentioned that strainer can be kind of a bitch
