I could be wrong, but there are a few benefits, and a few downsides as far as I know... Benefits include more torque, less moving parts and less weight, a narrower engine (so the accompanying frame can also be narrower), sounds... different. Basically a cross between a twin and an I4. Possible downsides include a lower rev limit, less horse power, and different power delivery (if you consider that a downside).
