An R6s is just a 2004 R6 with a newer model year tacked before the title.
The bikes are absolutely excellent, and have plenty of power. If you put an S up against an R at the track, the deciding factor would be the skill of the rider. Sure, the R's have the USD forks and the radial brakes, but the fact is, 95% of riders have no idea what advantage these parts have, and only want them for the cool-factor.
And, in fact, the advantage these parts offer is not that great, unless you are an advanced track rider. If you want your S to be more competitive, all you need is rearsets, a slip-on, a Power Commander, a filter, change the gearing, and if you do track days, have a professional set up your suspension for you.
For many people, owning a sportbike is nothing more than a big dick contest. That's why you see so many squids on 1000's with 2-inch wide chicken strips. If your friends are snickering at the fact that your bike doesn't have the latest technology, kindly tell them to **** off and worry about your own happiness instead.
