I remember going to Hangtown MX race a few years ago when it was 105*, back when RC4 was slaying everyone. We were walking through the pits and happened to run into an old friend who had some decent access to the Makita Suzuki setup. We got reasonably close to the setup and I was able to listen to a conversation they were having involving their fuel. Apparently, with the heat of the day, the humidity, etc, some of the characteristics of their fuel were creating major problems. Essentially, it had a low evap/boiling point and during motos the fuel in the tank above the engine was soaking enough heat that it was beginning to "boil" as they put it, making the bike not run correctly or not at all. They ended up putting a bunch of that reflective heat barrier on the bottom of the tank to prevent the problem. I had never even considered that such things could happen... So yeah, there is more to a fuel than octane.
Same thing happened to me at the Peoria TT one year. It was brutal hot and we were running Nutec Special5. After 2 or 3 restarts our bike wouldnt start. Damn fuel was messing up because of the temp. We were 1st the first 2 restarts, but ended up on the low step after coming from behind because of the starting issue.

These guys were having issues at around the 20 minute mark on the first moto, and before that on the second. Between the constant high rpm, the deep ruts, long uphills, and hot ambient temp and pretty much no cooling system, the bike would be okay on the stand and in the gate, but like I said, once the heat soaked the engine and fuel, it was pretty much over. I wanna say it was back when Tedesco was on Suzuki and it was his bike that quit mid moto, but its been a few years now and I wasn't really into suzuki's team...
oh, and did you just say Nutec Special 5? I havent heard anyone mention that stuff in years... Great stuff though. I only used it a couple of times. If I recall correctly, the Special 4 that came before it was some pretty harsh stuff on the fuel systems....
Just the price of the reflective COVER for a VP racing fuel can will make a man stagger. I don't even wanna look to see what the reflective fuel tank covers everyone uses are going for.

I remember them selling those kits for dirtbikes a while back, probably still do. They were right around $50 then.
Tucker retails JUST the fuel/race jug outerwear piece for like $145 IIRC. No joke!!
huh, maybe thats something more high tech. They were basically just using some dynamat like stuff on the bottom of the tank, as in they stuck that shit on there.... Now that was a few years ago, so yeah, things could definitely have changed.
