Some of you may know i have been fighting an idle issue for awhile now, i did sync my carbs and they were not that bad out of sync. My symptoms are bouncy idle, i have to keep it idled at 1800 rpms because when it drops, it drops down to 1200, the other symptom is when it is idling, if i crack the throttle and rev it to say 7k and let it fall, when it drops back down to idle it almost dies and sometimes it does die. I think that would mean the bowls are running out of gas? But i really don't know so i'm asking for some opinions. My settings are:
Factory Pro 155 & 150 mains
Factory Pro #40 pilots
OEM airfilter
OEM needles with 2 shims (1mm)
screws 2.5 out
elevation is 875' above
I pretty much rode with it like this all summer, but i'm about to tear it apart for the winter and would like to know what i should change or check.
Finally took it for a spin around town, it feels much smoother and it's way quieter than my other exhaust. It's idling pretty smooth but still has the bad idle drop.
I ordered the #40's from Factory Pro, i have not tried the stock jets, but last time i went to 2 turns out the idle was hanging, with changing the exhaust it might be ok at 2 turns out, but i thought this exhaust would make it run leaner.
That would make sense, it seems like i have been having this problem every since i changed to the #40 pilots. If i switch back to the #38 pilots where do i start on my mixture screws? Go back to 2.5 turns out?
I pulled the baffle out of the exhaust just to see what would happen, i picked up a stumble/hesitation between 4-6k rpms, only when i really crack the throttle from a low speed. Not sure what this means, but i guess i will change the pilot jets back to #38's and see what happens.
I changed the pilots back to #38 and set the mixture screws to 2.5 turns, helped some but did not fix the idle drop. I also adjusted the tps because it was off, that did nothing. I can live with the idle, but now i'm breaking up around 7k to 8k rpms, only a small amount though, it pulls through. Now if i slowly roll into it, it goes all the way up to red line. I'm guessing this new exhaust has leaned it out on the needle? As far as my idle goes, i'm thinking i have a valve problem, or a float issue.
Put the baffle back in and everything is all good now. Chaka433, i appreciate the advice but i already have bigger jets. If i shimmed my needle more it would probably fix the
7-8k problem, adding the baffle changed it just enough to correct it. I'm idling around 1400 rpms now, running smooth. I would say the #40 pilots was to rich for my elevation.
