-no real worries about rods stretching on any r6 ..
-correct, no stock slipper on an 05. (stock on 06 and up 3rd gen)
-crank bearings were a bit loose on 06-07, and a bulletin was put out by yamaha to go -1 or 1 tighter bearing when assembling the motor (i have posted a bunch about that). Crank has #'s, case has #'s.. a bearing color is indicated by these numbers. You simply -1 to get a different color bearing that tightens the clearance of the plane bearing to the crank.. issue solved. Was never a "recall" but dealers were to do the change for free if they were servicing a motor..

.. but don't listen to what I have to say, I have no idea what I'm talking about.. (enter sarcasm here).

Re: Used R6 What's the best year to purchase?

I just registered here, but have been lurking for a while. I am currently looking to get a used R6, but I dont have tons of cash to spend on one. I have noticed that the first gen (98-02) are pretty much right in the price range of what I would at least like to spend.

I don't mind carbed bikes, and I am not going to be doing track days. Its going to just be a casual use bike. Are the first gens really that bad? I have experience working on bikes, as does my father who had worked in a shop for a large portion of his life, so if its mechanical stuff, as long as it's not something that's ridiculous and known to be a problem with the bike, I don't mind doing some work.

I guess my main question on the matter is, is an R6 from the 98-02 range really not worth getting at all?

Get an 08 man, the new body with the best ECU settings and it rides awesome. You shouldn't have to pay too much for them either.

People prefer the 03+ because of the FI. I've heard from some track junkies that they prefer the 99-02 for some reason. I had an 02 loved it for the street, better than the 08. Get what you can afford. Only down fall in the 01-02 is the 2nd gear slip issue.

It's not that they're BAD necessarily.. It's just that the prices on most 2nd gens have gotten pretty darn low, and there aren't too many spare parts to be found for 1st gen bikes anymore. 2nd gen is really the way to go, but there's nothing WRONG with a 1st gen. I'd still ride one.

Ok cool. Thanks for the advice guys. I will keep a lookout for either a 1st or 2nd gen that comes up at a good deal! I will be sure to post pics and all that when I get it! Then I can change my RD profile pic to the R6
