Thought this was an interesting article over on autoblog... could this be a technology for sport bikes in the future? maybe not, but if they can get the weight down, who knows?!
Quite possibly. Technology trickles down. In these days of paddle shifters for cars, my guess is the clutch pedal and shift lever will go the way of the 8-track and rotary dial phone very soon. As for motorcycles, my friend speculates there will be some sort of conventional shift lever, but clutchless shifting up and down with some sort of sensor that will instantaneously release the clutch and cut the engine out. Add some type of centrifugal clutch and/or a locking-up fluid drive and the clutch lever itself will be gone.
But to be able to switch from manual to automatic on a bike would be great, as some cars do now. I'd like to see an arrangement similar to Honda's "Grade Logic" automatic transmission (my friend had it on his '94 Odyssey), that's the closest thing to a manual being an automatic. If you accelerate and then let off the gas, engine compression helps slow the car--it doesn't upshift unless you accelerate and continue to gain speed. This would be ideal for a motorcycle in stop-and-go riding.
