I just got myself an 06 R6. :YEA My previous bike (now tracked) was an 02. I am new to the fuel injected bikes so bear with me.
On the cold start, about how long should it take to crank over and on? I have tried cold starting a few times and been concerned that I will end up needing to push start it because I crank and crank and crank and FINALLY it gets going. I hear the fuel pump and some other stuff turn on when I turn my key so I'm not worried about those pieces not functioning. Furthermore, on a warm start the bike cranks just fine.
Is this normal or should I investigate a possible starter or what?
My 06 R6R takes about 2, sometimes 3, seconds to start. It concerned me in the past, but it isn't getting any worse so Ive learned to live with it. For what its worth, I have changed the air filter, oil, coolant, plugs, etc.. What I have noticed is significant "popping" when I am slowing down and/or rolling off the gas. I strongly suspect this is due to the need for a throttle body sync and am hoping that will somehow help with the starting problem as well. If you figure anything out please post it.
Check your battery too. Highly recommend upgrading to a Shorai battery or similar. If in fact your battery is the issue, a Shorai type bettery will be a huge improvement over stock...significant weight loss(if you care about that), but more importantly very quick turnover.
153.00? Steep if that ends up not being the problem. I had never heard of these batteries until you mentioned them, when this one goes bad I know what to order...
the shorai batteries are nice and it does save on weight alot. money vs weight reduction is a good deal the only downside about those batteries is that they are very temperamental with the cold weather, i had them before and coming from a nyc rider they sometimes wont crank for a while. just my .02
Thanks for the tip on the smog block offs. It was explained in the thread that the popping was unburnt fuel hitting the hot headers.
I really want to do the smog block offs, cut the cat, install a mid pipe, and paint the whole exhaust w/high temp ceramic paint. (black) I'm worried about leaning it out though, I don't have the cash for a fuel management system at the moment.
i do all the work on my bike and after i serviced it it started having trouble cold starting, turned out i'm lazy... couldn't be bothered adjusting the spark plug gap just looked at them and decided they where close enough (it was 2 in the morning and please don't ask why i was doing it then) adjusted them properly and now it starts almost as soon as i hit the starter.
This has been a long time coming, but I put some fuel injector cleaner in and it seems to have fixed the problem.
