How to ask the forum for help

(mods, if this is in the wrong section, I apologize and humbly ask it be moved to the correct section)

Ladies and Gents....

This is a little guide on how to get the most out of this forum when you have a problem with your bike, which at some point, we all do. Take a moment to give it a quick read, as it will make your life easier and less stressful.

Lets start easy, shall we?
  • Use the search function first. Take a couple of cracks at it as its not the greatest. This may find you the answer and will avoid many of the USE THE SEARCH comments. Google searches work too.
  • Start a thread with "HELP" and the topic of the problem (ex: HELP. Clutch issue.)
  • When you post your problem, be as clear as possible as to what the problem is. List all pertinent information and pay attention to the symptons and describe them in your original post.
  • Use english. We all read it and understand it and dont want to wade through a bunch of "i HaZ dis problum, yo an I dunno howz imma gonna haz ta fix da chit. Those of us that care enough to help you lose interest VERY quickly when we have to work to help you. Being lazy or typing "ghetto" because you think its cool, however, is a pain in the ass and you look like an idiot and will be flamed mercilously.
  • Use bullets or cliff notes to help us help you. Avoid run-on sentences.
  • Be easy to help. Stick with the thread so that you can answer any questions we may have of you, especially if you are a noob to bikes.
  • Take a deep breath, relax, and realize you probably arent the first person to have this problem, so the answers are out there.
  • Remember that this is the interwebz and some people like to make jokes and play around, get used to it. Some of those people may just be the folks with the answer you need
  • Try not to insult everyone if you dont get the answer you need right away. Your problem may be pressing to you, but isnt to the rest of us.
  • If you're super frustrated, say so and ask that the jokes be kept to a minimum. Not everyone will help

Its not a joke at all if you cant read and if you truly have issues, then you should PM someone knowledgable and see if they would be willing to work with you over the phone. I have helped quite a few people this way, at the expense of my time and minutes...sometimes it just works better too.

Another thing I wanted to mention is that the oem parts websites offer exploded views of things that really makes figuring out needed parts easy, and most have the part number right there for you to see, and if they dont, you simply add them to the cart and the numbers show up. Part numbers will not only help you keep the dealer honest if they order the wrong parts, but it can help you identify parts in question, as well as see where it may or may not go.

These are some sure fire steps that will have you on your way to getting the help you need. Sometimes you'll take some shit, especially if you did something stupid or noob-like. Its just the nature of the world, the forum, and doing something stupid. Remember that people are out there that care enough to help, but you HAVE TO help us help you. We dont want to have to spend time and effort trying to help you help us help you, especially when we could just sit and BS in RESPECT all day....And try not to be a little bitch about it if people joke around.

Re: How to ask the forum for help

True...
I am confused how some people can write a whole paragraph like this OP. It would take me twice as long and twice the effort if I was to try and have that many spelling and grammar errors.

Now I am not trying to make fun of people that have a hard time reading or spelling. My best friend cant read, or at least not above a 4th grade level. Its not a joke at all and if you truly have issues, then you should PM someone knowledgable and see if they would be willing to work with you over the phone. I have helped quite a few people this way, at the expense of my time and minutes...sometimes it just works better too. But then, if you cant read, you probably wouldnt be on a message board/forum....

Being lazy or typing "ghetto" because you think its cool, however, is a pain in the ass and you look like an idiot and will be flamed mercilously.
