I bought an r6s from a friend that owns a tow company, I figured I could clean it up and put a few bucks in it and flip it and make a buck or two on it. I believe it is between 03/08. It was impounded during a house raid, the bike was re vined to an 89 fzr 600, the vin is clean and has a clean Fla title. Is there a way to straighten this out??
Re-vined? How exactly do you "re-vin" a bike short of replacing the frame?
Pretty sure the original vin should be on the motor too (I know it is in more than one place on mine... I think the motor is the second location but I am too lazy to go look). You should find the original vin and run it through a checker before you try and sell the bike. If it is indeed stolen and you sell it you could find yourself stuck with lawyer bills due to being forced to prove to a court that you had no knowledge of the original theft.
The frame has obviously been restamped. According to my local yamaha dealer the only vin is the one stamped on the front right side of the steering neck. I also asked them about the number on the back of the motor, they said that was just a casting number. I talked to a friend that is a deputy for my local sheriff department and he said as long as the numbers on the frame match the ones on the title nothing can b done about it.

Not true. There is a way to "xray" the frame and actually see if there was another VIN number in which, you will be screwed. Odds of someone paying to do this, very unlikely

on the inside of the head of the motor, there should be a serial number. they can run this number and trace it right back to the vin. i believe there is another one on the transmission or somewhere else too. its not the vin, but it may as well be. if you purchase a used motor and dont have proof of where you purchased the motor and that serial number tracks back to a stolen bikes VIN, you could be in deep shit when you didnt even think you were doing anything wrong.
