That's more likely an ignition advance issue. You have to be stupid lean to detonate to that degree. Only with power adders would this happen from AFR being so off.

And they are air cooled and get so hot and run richer and richer as they heat up.

I know some bad ass harleys. My best friends dad is amra racer. He runs 2 harleys, a 11 sec 900lb bagger and 8.5 sec pro class bike. They had a 03 sportster my friend took down the track a few times and they never had an issue out of it
