New Track guy in PHX

Hi all! Thought I'd say hello officially and maybe ask some newbie questions. I did my first track day 2 years ago and the bug bit hard and I've been racing ever since. I currently have a 06 Triumph Daytona for the track and a 08 for the street. I will be getting my new to me track toy, a 07 R6, at the first of December. Here is a quick description from the current owner-not including everything but the big stuff:

"2007 Yamaha R6 with clean title. Bazzaz EFI unit with quick shifter. BMC race air filter. Full Leo Vince Corsa titanium exhaust. Ohlines 25mm fork cartridges. Ohlines TTX rear shock that's been reworked by ESP. Ohlines steering damper. Woodcraft rear sets. Brembo master cylinder. CRG GP clutch lever system. Comes with transponder #51. Armor Bodies body work. Bazaaz auto tuner. Vortex case covers. Dyno tuned to 117 rear wheel hp by ESP on 91 octane pump gas. Also comes with stands, Chicken Hawk tire Warmers. Yamaha maintainable manual. And what ever other little crap that I can't think of right now."

The reason I wanted the R6 is B/C everyone says it is the best handling 600 out hands down. My current plan is to test it out for a bunch of track days during the off season and then I have a decision to make: Keep on with my Triumph or switch to the R6. I’ve had a lot of issues with the Triumph and I'm kinda fed up with it at this point. It's mechanically been sound and it's very easy to tip in to corners, but I can't get the front end feel I want. In fact the front end is so numb my friends call me "Low-side" b/c I cant feel the front slipping at all and I lose it constantly. That is a big problem b/c Triumph parts are harder to find and more expensive. Also my first kid was just born and the wife isnt too tolerant of me coming home rashed up with a bike that needs to be put back together. So I hope this R6 can knock my socks off!

I have done a little reading though and I'm a little worried about 2 things with the 07 and I'm sure y’all can guess what they are:1 Engine issues, I’ve been told though with regular tune-ups and fresh bearings every season the engine(crank) should be reliable. 2 Vagueness with the front end AGAIN! lol did I just inherit the same problem? I mean this in comparison to the previous and later model R6. I read on here about removing a bar that allows the chassis to flex more? I also read that adding 08+ lower triples helps as well? I know the search button is my friend but I thought since this was my intro I could ask a few question that I'm sure have already been discussed to death.

Anyway I'm glad to be here, the community/forums seem really active with lots of good info!

Haha guess I dropped the ball already, I'll see if I can steal some off the current owner's FB. Its a really nice black/orange job, but FYI I'll be selling them b/c I crash too much to have nice paint

Welcome aboard! I imagine the R6 will be cheaper to fix, and much easier to find parts for.

There's a dude on here who's been racing R6s for years and knows every year inside and out - Melk-Man, he might have some tips for getting better front-end feel out of the '07.

The 2008 is generally considered the cream of the crop. The 06-07 are known for being very twitchy. In '08 they made the forks a little longer (ie, front rides higher for a more stable ride) and it also made the most power. 09+ is a few ponies down in stock form due to emissions stuff. Not huge differences, and if you're building a race bike, pretty easily accounted for.

Where do you race? You get out to CVR ever?

Welcome to the Family!

You don't happen to run that current Daytona track bike at Arroyo Seco, do you? I just moved out here a few months back and been going to Arroyo Seco Raceway since. It's a fun little track to learn on for sure. Only know/seen a couple Triumphs out there, just wondering if that's you. If not, look into Arroyo Seco. I know some guys come out from your area...

and again, welcome!

Cool, I'll PM him and see if he minds giving me some tips-twicthy is not what I need lol.

I've ridden CVR a few times, loved it. I want to race there next season but if I do i'm gonna get a 250!

Thanks! Look forward to seeing you out there next year! I'm just getting into this myself... If you've got any questions about the R6 though, let me know. Been tearing my apart and working on it for years now...

Nice! I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Have a friend up near San Francisco that's got a 250 he was racing in AFM for sale.

Been riding track days for two seasons on the '6, but I'm still sloooooooooooooow. Figure the 250 might get me to man up and actually carry some corner speed.
