Yep, another 'Wont start, Seeking help' thread: Long
Hey Team,
So my bike is a bit messed up right now and I'm going to try to sort it early next week.
I think the problems are electrical and its my first time trying to troubleshoot electrical stuff.
Ive done some research but any pointers or things to look out for would be greatly appreciated!
Back story:
About a month or two ago I lowsided at NJMP. (Im fine, bike.... not so much).
I got it towed to where I live in Manhattan (thanks roger!).
At the time I thought it was all body work (fairing stay/headlights etc) and stripped it to take inventory of what I needed to replace.
While working on it someone stole my Wiring Harness for the Headline/Console/TurningSignal. (Because new york)
So now keep in mind that the rest of whats going on has been without a Speedo/Console, Air Pressure/Temp Gauge, Lights etc
I don't think it should make a difference but I just don't know... do any of you?
Two weeks later I try starting it for the first time.
Using the battery, the relay clicks but the engine doesnt try to crank.
However, I was able to start it with a Jump.
I was also able to start it with a Bump.
I then ride about 1.5 hours out of the city, nekkid w/o wiring harness, to a garage upstate where I planned to work on it.
A few miles away from my destination the bike dies like this:
I'm going about 35mph through a town. The engine gets really sputtery, choppy...
I get power for a second or two, then chuggs along with no power, them I get power for another second or two and again chuggs with no power.
I have WOT to try to keep the engine running but it eventually dies.
I try starting it with the battery, but the relay just clicks and doesn't crank.
So, that means during the 1.5 hour ride the battery didn't get charged, right?
I try bumping it down a hill, it sputters but doesn't start.
I push it to a garage, pull the battery and charge it overnight.
Next morning I put the battery in and try to start it.
Again, the Relay clicks but It doesn't try to turn over.
I try jumping it off a car, with the battery still connected.
The engine cranks but it still doesn't start.
The fuses are fine and the tank is full of fresh gas.
I tow it to my garage and leave it there for the next two weeks.
This Tuesday/Wednesday Ill try working on it for the first time since this happened.
This is what I plan to do:
Replace the Wiring Harness with one I bought on ebay.
Replace the Battery with a fresh on.
Check if lights are working, headlights, brake, neutral lights etc.
Check Battery voltage with power off, power on etc.
Regardless if it starts with a fresh battery Ill still do the following:
Inspect wiring from Stator to R/R looking for burnt leads etc.
Inspect remaining wiring for damage/shorts, perhaps by fan, check grounds etc.
Check battery voltage above 5k rpm.
If it still no start:
Check Fuel pump. Does it prime, squirt when the battery is on.
Finally, pull the plugs, check for sparks, check the resistance in the coils etc.
So, my question is:
Am I approaching this the right way?
Anything I'm overlooking?
Any help would be appreciated it.
Thanks guys!
Chris

Why you no start?!?!?

Well, that was easy...
After connecting the wiring harness and a new battery the sukker started right up.
The consol didnt even through any error codes.
Im guessing one of the grounds had poor contact.
Volts on the battery were as follows:
Power Off: ~12.6
Power On, Engine off: ~12.1
Engine Idle: ~14.1
5k: ~14.1
This indicates the battery charges, right?
I checked the resistance between the 3 wires from the stator nonetheless...
They were all between 3&4 ohms.
So, I guess Im good, right? No problems?
I do have a few questions though:
Why is my battery at 14.1 when idling?
Everywhere I read has said it only charges above 5k...
Also, is my stator alright giving 4ohms?
I think I read somewhere that it needs to be under 3...

The stator makes the voltage go up when it idles. Everything you've posted indicated great success except for the stolen parts! I've got a garage you can always use bro!!
Anyway, the stator makes the voltage increase, but doesn't really put out enough amperage to really throw a charge at the bike until the RPMS are higher and it's making more electricity.

That video is epic Chris....... But you know what????? something is really wrong in that TURN bcos i have seen many guys go down right in that same spot one of them was the coach if you remember the first time we hit the track , you also see that white line cutting through the turn thats how i remember it.
