Hey guys, need help with my sister's (my old) R6...what am I missing here?
2003 R6.
Here's what I've checked:
Bar end is not rubbing the grip/throttle tube.
The decel cable had a lot of slack in it, so I tightened it up, now the throttle doesn't snap back at all lol. This is confusing.
I can disconnect the cables at the throttle bodies, the spring snaps back without the cables in it.
While they're disconnected I can hold each one and pull them back and forth smoothly, freely, and with no binding.
The throttle tube spins freely with the cables disconnected. There was some gunk on the clip on so I cleaned both it and the inside of the throttle tube.
The throttle cables haven't been rerouted or anything like that, since the problem started. I don't know what I'm missing here. Everything works by itself, I hook it all back up and turn the throttle and it stays open.
Any ideas? Very aggravating because it's such a simple set up, yet it's got the best of me at the moment.
that is not a "decel" cable. The spring on the throttle bodies does that, and is why the throttle should snap back. the 2nd cable is for safety. So you can close the throttle in the event something happens (like the main cable is pinched, spring on tb breaks, etc.).
Put some iree play back in the cables.
What Greg said. The fact that there was excessive freeplay in the return cable may be an indication that there was a problem, previously, and someone put slack in the cable as a "band aid" fix. I would concentrate on the return cable.
1.It doesn't need to be taught. Some freeplay is OK
2. Lube the cables. Always a good thing to do.
3. Check the routing. They may feel smooth when disconnected, but when connected, there may be some added stress from a bend that is not present when hanging free. This can also present itself when turning the bars all the way to the left or right.

Thanks guys, now that I think about it it doesn't make sense to tighten that cable unless there's a spring throttle side to pull it back.
I just saw decel cable in the FSM and it was late and my mind wasn't working right.
I'll put the slack back in that cable. And I'll try a different route for the cables even though nothing changed before the start of this issue. Any of ideas?
You'd be surprised how much good some lube will do......(slight pause to let the innuendos commence)
Here's the method I use:
1. disconnect the cables from the handle bar end.
2. cut the bottom corner out of a plastic sandwich bag.
3. insert the cable end into the bag from the hole you just cut.
4. wrap a rubber band around the bag and cable housing (making the bag a funnel)
5. spray lube in the bag and let it drain into the cable.
This method, works well and keeps everything fairly clean.

You do know they sell cable lube kits with the cable too and lube all included?
Something like this, and you spray the lube in thru the tube provided with the bottle of spray aerosol lube

But I'd bet that bag full of lube is much less than I use with the tool. You won't see a trained mechanic rigging up a plastic bag mess now would you!? Especially since this is routine, frequent and regular maintenance!
