06R6 - Removing the tank cover (need help) : Yamaha R6 : R6 Forum

I just got done washing my bike and I wanted to take some of the plastics off so I can wax it. I have the A & B panels off (with the 'R6' logo), the seat and the side covers for the tank, but I can't figure out how to remove the main/top tank cover.

After the side tank covers came off, I removed the screws from the sides and the allen bolt from the top of the tank cover. I can't see any other bolts or fasteners holding it on, but it doesn't want to budge. I figured it would probably just slide forward to come off like the side-tank covers did, but it doesn't feel like it will. Is there some trick to it that I'm just not seeing? I don't want to break anything - I just wanted to get the cover off to make it easier to wax while I already have the rest of the bike broken down.

Can anyone help me out?

I took my tank off when I was installing my trick flasher. the stock relay sits unterneath the back part of the tank by the battery. Once you get the sides off and the allen screw in the front lift the entire tank gently and it will pivot up on the screw going through it by the batter compartment.... be sure to pull on the tank cover gently being careful not to break it. After it comes up you will see how it is attached.... its really kinda stupid because you cant take it off unless you pivot the tank up..... hope this helps.

So you need to lift the entire tank in order to remove the tank cover? If so, are there any other screws or bolts that need to be removed to lift the tank itself (other than the 2 screws on the sides for the side panels and the allen bolt on the top)?

I'm going to need to figure it out eventually anyways since I'm planning on replacing the tank cover with a carbon fiber piece in a few weeks.

yea you basically are going to be moving your tank up and down on your pivot screw that im sure you've seen by your battery compartment.... and also use common sense if you see there are still bolts attached to the tank dont yank on the top plastic cover... OH I almost forgot dont pivot your tank up too high or your gonna ripp out your fuel lines and at that point your gonna have a hell of a clean up on your hands

Well, I got the tank cover removed and managed to do it without spilling gasoline everywhere.

I ended up having to remove a pair of additional allen bolts from the left and right hand side of the tank. Then the tank just lifts up pretty easily. The pains in the ass, though, were the 2 bolts on the underside of the tank that needed to be removed to actually remove the cover. I used a towel to help prop the tank up a bit so I could get under it with a socket wrench.

I took a couple pictures in case anyone else needs to do this - these might be helpful:

Here you can see the two holes on the top of the tank where the cover bolts on to:

...the side of the tank with the bottom hole where the allen bolt connects it to the frame and the top hole where the tanks' side cover screws into:

...and the underside of the tank cover, where you can see the two mounting points where it bolts to the underside of the tank:

Okay, that killed enough time. Wax should be dry now - time to go polish her up and bolt her back together.

thats pretty damn sweet dude.... yea I didnt go as far as to remove it but I did remove that bolt at the bottom so my buddy lifted the entire tank while I quickly unplugged the stock relay.....

I can't believe you went through all that trouble just to wax the tank and still have the factory warning stickers on!

Thanks for the how-to though. I am considering the carbon piece myself.

LOL! Yeah, I guess I probably should take those warning stickers off the tank, huh?

I did, at least, take the ugly white VIN sticker off of the frame - that thing stuck out like a sore thumb on the black bike.
