My Title has the wrong VIN number!!!

All,

I had a buyer come to my house and wanted to buy my bike and he checked the vin number stamped on my frame vs the vin on my title and the title has a Q when the frame says it should be a 0. What do I do? He said for me to get it fixed and then he will buy it.

Re: My Title has the wrong VIN number!!!

call the registration office and ask them.

are you the original owner? if not, do you have a copy of the title with the previous owner's name on it? if so, see what that VIN is, and show it to the tax office. when they transfer the title, they make up a new one, and could have easily made a typo. but it'll be hard to prove. good luck!

I believe that the letters I, O, and Q are not allowed to be in VIN numbers. This should be an easy fix. They may have you bring the bike in to inspect it but I don't see it being a problem.

Re: My Title has the wrong VIN number!!!

dmv isn't the same around here. when i've had to register my bikes in the past, i have to take the paperwork to the county tax assessor/collector's office (registration office). the dmv is for licenses and stuff. good luck.

good to know about the I, O, and Q not being allowed. learn something new everyday.

Re: My Title has the wrong VIN number!!!

kinda the same, I bought a bike from a guy in NY with a clean title. My title and registration were taking very long so i called the dmv they said it was sent to risk managment for possible fraud. So a detective calls to come out and inspect the bike because they thought it was possibly stolen. Long story short. Not stolen... Totaled in florida in 03 then rebuilt and brought into PA on a fake title. So the clean titled bike i bought now must get inspected and isued a RECONSTRUCTED PA title. Yes I got it real hard. Guess Il be riding this thing forever. Guess no Sumo for christmas.

Re: My Title has the wrong VIN number!!!

Q is allowed "O" is not and 0 (Zero) IS used. The same with I is not and 1 is used.

Re: My Title has the wrong VIN number!!!

Holy cow! I got the title back for the R6 I just bought and this thread kept popping into my head for some reason so I decided to go verify the VIN. Sure enough it was wrong!

They had an H instead of J for the first letter of the VIN. I was all worried but I took at picture of the VIN, printed it out and went to the DMV and they said that it wouldn't be problem and the submitted the paperwork today.

You might try that and see if it'll work for you. A couple of my friends are in banking and Insurance and they say it happens all the time. They said as long as it isn't like 4 or 5 numbers, especially the last set (which should be all numbers) that its usually no big deal.
