1999 r6 dash lights problem help please!!!!!

hi,
i signed up to help a friend who has an r6.

he has a 1999 r6, looks to me like its meant to be a marlboro rep, its orange and white but no marlboro stickers??

the problem is

the dash display works fine when the bike is started, lights turned off.

turn the lights on to either side or main and the dash display disappears and the rev counter stops working

turn the lights off and the rev counter comes back on and so does the digi display

can anyone help me to help him out. any help is much appreciated

thanks, james

oh there was one other thing, the ignition barrel is very akward to get it round to park and between off and on etc, once on steering lock its really hard to jiggle it about to then get the key back out. it has the orginal key

Re: 1996 r6 dash lights problem help please!!!!!

Yea i did eventually. It was an earth problem, an earth had been left un connected somewhere but I can't remember where it was, possibly around the battery box though I can't be certain. After reconnecting it the dash worked fine!
Good luck!

Re: 1996 r6 dash lights problem help please!!!!!

hi thanks for replying, ive had a complete new wiring harness fitted, new ecu and i bought second hand clocks and still have the problem. thinking it might be the clocks still as the clocks i bought could have had he same problem as my origanals. i gave up in the end and took to a bike mechanic with an auto electrican there. he said he had never seen anything like it. when yours went did it just happen randomly or were you were on it and something happend? thanks

Re: 1996 r6 dash lights problem help please!!!!!

No worries. It was quite and while ago now that I can't remember properly. It wasn't my bike, it was a friends and I was just trying to Leo out. I think he had another proved but I can't remember what it was, there was something that I couldn't solve. But after sorting the earth out (I may have even run anothe earth myself from the clock area) the dash stayed on ok. I think his was an import we found out later And that's why it was orange/white/black.
Sorry I can't help more. Can't remember if i posted anything on other forums.
