I pretty much did mine the same way you did but instead of cutting any wires I took apart the connectors to pull the original wires then just put them back together outside of the assembly, my way probably resulted in a little more wire to hide but all worked out! Great write up.

+1.. i used this how to + agg's + the link on how to disassemble the connectors. it was more time consuming but i was really opposed to cutting wires. It turned out great!!
