MAC issues

I have always been a PC person, but recently, per a friends advice, I bought a MAC. I love this computer, but I think I may have screwed it up some. I just need to know how to do periodic system maintenance.

On the PC I could go in and clean up the hard drive, and Defrag, etc etc. But I find with the Mac I don't have that option or I haven't found it yet.

I have a ton of web pages in my memory that make it hard for me to find what I am truly looking for.

So If anyone has any suggestions (other than throw it out a window) Id appreciate it.

Re: MAC issues

OSX is not like windows. when you delete something it is gone, and leaves no remnants. just move to trash and empty the trash and you made some space.

"OS X automatically defrags files that are less than 20 megabytes. These files will make up the majority of your computer, unless you use it for specialized tasks such as software compiling or high-quality graphic design."

Re: MAC issues

So I have to go through all my files and delete the ones that I don't want or need?

What if I delete the wrong thing? Is there a way, like PC, to delete old internet cookies and files that are no longer in use?

Re: MAC issues

Try using MacCleanse if you want a file cleaner, it'll clean all caches and logs etc etc but like has been mentioned osx isn't like windows and system maintenance is handled automatically by the OS... Defrag (for files under 8MB only) is handled by the OS as well so unless you have a lot of very active GB sized files (aperture libraries for eg) you don't need to worry about that also... If you need help just ask, i've been using macs for 7 years now...

Ps im sure some google'ing can find this for free... wink wink
