Wierd coil reading on 00 R6...

So here is the situation. Ive been working to bring back to life a 00 R6 that its been seated for some time now. The other day I took the coils out to test them and this happened. On the first reading all 4 of them went to 0 but, here is the thing, even when it when to 0 the multimeter will beep like there is continuity, but again the multimeter is reading 0. On the secondary reading they all read about the same. So either all of them are in the same bad shape or what? If anyone have any ideas they are more than welcomed.

P.S. I looked but didnt find other threads with this issue, sorry if already there.

lets make sure you are using the tester correctly
ohm testing and continuity testing is 2 different settings on the meter. if your meter has a switch and these 2 tests are together the meter should have a mode button. you have to select the correct mode if you want to see the resistance values.

maybe this might help,

Re: Wierd coil reading on 00 R6...

for shits and giggles I dug out an old set of coils i have that work. but were part of the replacement campaign because of the insulation break down. so the resistance measurements should show correctly as the bike ran just fine.

i had to select the proper mode on my meter. once done it reads as follows,
so the primary test I have .2 which is in range. secondary test 5.87k which is in range.

below are 2 pictures. maybe this will help you. sorry don't know why they got rotated sideways

So I checked again the readings and its just like I explained before. On the primary as soon as it starts to read, it drops to 0 even though it keeps beeping. It happens in all of them. Someone said to check the R/R but stills how did the 4 of them have the same problem? The “computer”?
And is there a way to check if the R/R is working properly?
Thanks again

Sounds like you're in continuity mode, instead of resistance. Don't know this for sure, but suspect that with at least some auto-ranging meters, there's more of a difference between the two modes than just the beep.

Try an an analog meter.

Re: Wierd coil reading on 00 R6...

it's also likely the meter just can't read that low on the primary reading. it takes all 3 of mine a few seconds to stop bouncing around before it settles on .2

Re: Wierd coil reading on 00 R6...

So, I checked the above readings against two other digital meters.... my newest meter and my oldest meters, and specifically the Primary Coil. All (including the first newer coil) read 0.3 Ohm when you subtract the amount of resistance from having only the probes shorted against each other. Unfortunately I don't have a meter that can read 0.00 (hundredths) Ohm. Only tenths of an Ohm meaning, they're rounding.

Here's the kicker. On the original set, one of the coils was replaced, because it was firing at a *much* smaller gap, than the other three. (each coil tested on the same cylinder) So even though the readings are showing as being on the top range of spec, they may actually be *just* out of spec. 0.08 of range ain't much. Are other capacitor discharge ignition systems this finicky?
