Weird noise when clutch is let out

I noticed today that when I let the clutch out without giving any throttle, my bike makes a strange noise from the right engine side. I don't even know how to describe it, rattling maybe?? I posted a video below of when I start and stop three times and every time I start it does it. Am I just paranoid or could this be something?

You mean that its natural that it sounds like that or that the cam chain tensioner shouldn't sound like that?

Re: Weird noise when clutch is let out

no they shouldn't sound like that. they are a hydraulic operated tensioner so they work off of oil psi. and the 2006 and 2007 had bad oiling system issues with low oil pressure at idle. a lot of them blew up because of it.
you may need to have a reputable shop take a look at it and see.
you could try using a stethoscope to pinpoint the noise. another way is to stick the handle of a screwdriver to your ear and touch the area of suspected noise. as for the tensioner they make a manual one but it needs routine adjusting. but it wont/can't fail like the stock one can. and has, to a lot of guys.

Alright thanks. I actually did take it to a shop and had them test drive it. They said they noticed it but if you just give a little throttle you dont notice it. They said its fine but keep an eye open in case it gets worse..

Re: Weird noise when clutch is let out

Couldn't I just replace the cam chain tensioner and see if it fixes it?

If the timing chain slips, you lose an engine.

Re: Weird noise when clutch is let out

That's *extremely* high risk in my mind. One *must* eliminate that as a possibility.

If that were mine and I were reasonably sure the noises were originating from the timing cover area, (consulting the manual for details,) I'd pull the chain cover off at the crankcase, pull the valve cover off, spark plugs out, turn the engine manually at the crank while visually inspecting everything (guides, sprockets, chain, tensioner) for at least one full rotation. Then (consulting the manual for details,) I'd remove the timing chain tensioner, operate and inspect it; test if at all possible. I'd touch, inspect and possibly remove all three chain guides for deeper inspection. Memory serving, the manual identifies some details on inspecting the timing chain and sprockets for wear, damage, play. If not, there are general procedures for identifying chain and sprocket wear online.

Keep in mind that the cams and crank, should not be allowed to rotate independent of each other or damage will result. Take great care before releasing the tensioner. "Tension" created by valve springs and engine compression can generate sudden movement.

Re: Weird noise when clutch is let out

Being the easiest to do, the tensioner should be eliminated first and foremost; the other mentioned procedures done if the tensioner checks out.
