2007 vs 2008 Swingarm - Where are the Differences?

Hi, I have a question about the differences in the swingarm and rear wheel for the 2007 vs 2008. I have a reasonable amount of knowledge about the bikes, I'm hoping someone can fill in my gaps.

Background - A friend has a 2007 R6 track bike. The rear wheel has always been difficult to put in place, I assumed his swing arm had been tweaked from a crash and was bent in. I have a spare 07 swingarm in the garage attic and swapped them recently. But the problem persists, the replacement swingarm is too narrow for the wheel. You literally have to use a pry bar to wedge a gap to get the the wheel in.

Although he bought his 2007 R6 as a track bike, there is little question about whether the wheel, swingarm, etc are correct for his bike. Everything looks correct.

I have a 2008 R6 track bike and spares of everything. I take my rear wheel off and measure the swingarm widths. Both of the 2007 swingarms measure 238mm. The 2008 swingarm measure 242mm. Now I am looking for what is suppose to be 4mm less for the 2007, to make up that difference.

- Rims are the same from 2003-2016.
- Rear wheel bearings are the same for 2007 and 2008 (I looked up the part numbers on the Allballs website).
- Sprocket hubs are the same from 2003-2016.
- Axle adjuster blocks are the same width for 2007 and 2008.
- Wheel spacer widths are the same for 2003, 2007, and 2008, they are all 14mm.
- Rear brake caliper mount width is the same for 2007 and 2008.

I took my 2008 rim and it won't fit on his bike. I took his 2007 and it fits fine on my bike. Measuring through the axle hole of both wheels (with spacers in) is the same for both rims.

So, the outstanding question, is there a wheel internal spacer difference between 2007 and 2008? If so which spacer is specifically different?

Logically I would think that the 2007 swingarm is the problem... But I have two in my garage with no dents or crash damage, both measuring identical widths to the millimeter. Both are 4mm less than the 2008 swingarm. If the swingarm isn't the problem then what is the difference. If the swingarm is the problem then what proof do you have for me.

I'd appreciate any help, I spent half my weekend on his bike and at the moment all I have to show for it is cleaned suspension linkages.

Never had that issue...ever. Have a 2007, 2010, and a 2014.
Only major difference on the early models is they have thinner front rotors on the wheels.
Also my 07 has quick change hardware... so front & rear wheel swaps are a 30-50 second affair.

I don't understand the problem either. I don't understand why I have a difference in swingarm widths. Hopefully someone knows the answer.

I had a similar problem when I crashed my 08 R6. I don't think the 07 is your problem. See my thread here for my experience. It was really annoying. The replacement I bought looked perfect. I went through all the trouble of replacing to then find out it didn't fit...

Thanks for the link to your thread. The swingarm getting pinched because someone forgot to put a spacer in is an interesting theory. Perhaps I was unlucky and bought a spare swingarm where the same thing happened. It's the only active theory I have so far.

I'll start looking for another swingarm, Cheers.

Weird. I went through this exact same thing buying a swingarm off Ebay. The swingarm was in great shape minus the fact the wheel would not go on.

Since my friend now has two useless swingarms, I'm going to try to bottle jack one of them open a few mm. Might as well see what happens before it goes to the scrap yard

I would put some wood between the jack/swingarm so you spread the load.
