Needle bearing on the rear wheel

What exactly is the purpose of the needle bearing on the rear wheel? I heard it doesn't really carry any weight.

negative. it rides on the collar. technical name.

and it most certainly carries weight. the drive hub is the one that doesn't. it is not attached to the rim.
