Ok so I know this has been talked about but thought I asked anyways what people's thoughts on higher mileage bikes 33,000 is the average miles I see for used bikes is there a reason behind it ? Do they blow up around then ? I know maintenance is a key and what not , but I want to know people's thoughts would it need a rubuild soon ??

i think the key is proper maintenance. i wouldn't worry too much about mileage. what if you found a used car with 33k miles? it doesn't seem like that much, then.

i would use it as a bargaining chip for negotiating a price, however. if it was maintained properly, the bike should have paperwork showing when it was serviced and what stuff like valve clearance were measured at. no paperwork, no buy. or, the price plummets. but, that's just me...

Ya that's a good point most people don't keep records of stuff . Do bikes have a carfax or is that a stupid question ? I see a lot of salvage titles normally that means frame damage right ??

i don't know about a carfax for bikes. that might be very helpful if there was such a thing.

salvage title doesn't have to mean frame damage, but i would probably walk away from a bike with one unless i personally knew the seller. all it might mean is that it was in a crash and the repair bill exceeded the value of the bike. generally speaking, if you need to have the plastics replaced as well as the tank, that work with the parts will exceed most bike values...

So I went with a 99 I should be picking it up weds so hopefully it all goes well . But ya I've scene alot of salvaged title I normally stay away in a car so figure it was the same way with a bike hit and miss with frame damage car air bags and fender the car total so .

My 05 was stolen with 43,000+- miles... I've had several FZR's with over 30k...

Yet bought a '97CBR with 6k original miles for track use, and it burned oil and clanked to hell.

+1 on the up-keep, and how the bikes rode / cared for.

Well hopefully things go well today and everything checks out , it's hard to say when it comes to how the bike was maintained cause the second Onwer could take great care but the first owner beat the hell out of it , plus u never know if it was broken in properly , sorry to hear u got it stolen , ya I looked at cbr but I hate the banana seat , so another question if someone asking 2,400 for 99 with no paper work how much would u offer ?

Getting a title is a pain. It used to be in CA if the vehicle hadn't been register in 7 years, it fell off the CA DMV records and you could file for a "lost title" in your name for $15. I don't know if that is still the case. The catch was that if you inquired about it before it fell out of the system, it would flag it, and it would stay on the system longer.

Sorry didn't mean title as for the bike , more on the lines of like paper work of thing done to the bike service work , motor rebuilds and stuff , ya my buddy just went thru the hole not having a title on a car it's not fun u wait forever

Then $2400 is about what it's worth. Franly, I usually don't care about all that paper when buying a used bike. I would be going through is the same whether the PO told me he had serviced it, or not. (Comp checks, plugs, Valve clearance check, tires, oil, chain/sprockets.....)

Ya I guess your right I kinda do the same but didn't think of it , but I don't know about the valve clearance all have to look into that , I'm driving few hrs to get the bike so it better be worth my time , speaking of plugs oem ones work fine ?? I normally run ngk stuff .

So if the valve clearance is not great will it need a rebuild ?? Also is there a reason why the service book only goes up to 30k of service
If the valve clearance is out of spec the valves will need to be shimmed, which can run you a few hundred bucks. The service manual only runs that high because at that point you have intervals for everything. Oil is every 3k, valve clearance checks are every 25-30k, ect. There's nothing special that happens at 60k, for instance, so there's no reason to have the book go that high for service intervals.

Ok well that's good to know , few hundred bucks isn't to bad . Ya I wasn't sure about the book I was like hmm 30k miles and everyone sell around then lol so had to make sure there wasn't a reason . Plus it's nice knowing thing that need to be done cause are other bike is a 01 but only has 17k on it so should be good for awhile. The only issue we have run into is Electical other then that the bike been good to us

Be aware, the 1st gen bikes had a well-known issue with 2nd gear...
