to test something this basic a $9.99 volt meter is plenty to at least see the flow of volts.
when you attach your meter, one direction will be negative 12 volts (5 if its just a reference signal) and the other direction will be normal 12 volts.
when you press the meter to the motorcycles wiring harness; remember it only needs to make contact. do not force, twist, bend, shove, or otherwise manipulate anything.
***if the meter is not showing a constant signal, they make attachments for your meter that plug into the socket like the original harness.
Blue with red tracer is the running light wire for the front turn signals, that is what I tapped into
