I put a multimeter on the battery of my R6 2001 and the Volts dropped to 8.6 while cranking. Then back to 12+ while running.

does it need to be replaced? it is several years old already.

I believe the minimum it should be able to maintain during crank is just above ten volt.
This of course assumes that the mechanics of the engine/starter are good; wiring.

Running voltage by the way should be battery voltage (if fully charged) or above.

Running on a bad battery supposedly stresses the charging system because they're not designed to run at high field for extended periods. It's cheaper to replace the battery now, versus replace a stator later.

yes I agree, I meant now, as in winter is coming and being 7 years old it wont make it through the next cold period.

I have to reread up on Gel tech, but memory serving, I believe AGM is supposed to be better.
