Ive been told just throw some WD-40 on there and it will be good, but is lube for the chain way better or would it be ok to stick with WD-40?

NO....wd-40 is not a chain lube! Its not good for the o-rings on the chain. get some real chain lube
WD-40 i've been told is water based and is not good for your bearings or your sprockets at all. I use WD-40 to clean all the old lube and dirt off my chain then go over it 2-3 time with black label chain lube.

I've heard bad things about spraying your chain with WD.
Any suggestions on some good chain lube?
to clean my chain i use an engine degreaser and wipe it all off. then apply some white spray grease. u can get from any shop that sells that kinda stuff. there are specific things out there but i was recommended to use spray grease. not a lot. just a bit all round

Wd40 will break the chain down, i use pj1 chain spray, very good stuff.
would it be ok for me to use brake parts cleaner to get off the old gunk and then follow up with chain lube?
